New Titleist TSR Metals Make Their Debut at the Travelers Championship

PGA TOUR | Travelers Championship

The NEW Titleist TSR drivers – the next generation of the most played drivers on the PGA TOUR – made their debut this week at the Travelers Championship, with 18 players putting new TSR2TSR3 or TSR4 models immediately in play, including two of the Top 5 finishers: J.T. Poston (TSR3 9.0°) and Chesson Hadley (TSR3 10.0°).

  • Also among those making the switch to TSR drivers this week: Jordan Spieth (TSR3 10.0°), Cameron Davis (TSR3 8.0°) and Davis Riley (TSR3 8.0°), who led the field in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee (+5.94).
  • Poston and Davis also added NEW TSR fairway metals to their bag, with a total of 13 TSR2 and TSR3 fairways going in play this week in Hartford.
  • Titleist was the overwhelming field favorite for golf balls with 72% of the players teeing up a Pro V1 or Pro V1x (nearest competitor, 10%).
  • In addition to golf balls, Titleist was also the most trusted driverhybridutility ironironwedge and putter at the event.

DAVIS RILEY ON HIS TSR DRIVER

  • Playing a TSR3 8.0° driver, Davis Riley averaged a career-best 1.48 strokes gained off the tee per round this week, leading the field. His 2.41 strokes gained off the tee in Sunday’s final round was also the best of his career.
  • “Immediately when I pulled the headcover off, I was like, ‘Dang, this looks really good.’ The overall look, the feel is awesome. It’s really good. The mishits are really good. I’m finding really consistent spin across the face no matter where I’m hitting it, so that you’re maxing out your carry numbers every time. It’s what you really want to look for. It’s not how good your good hits are. It’s, ‘How good are your bad hits?’ And just seeing that consistency across the face is really cool to see.
  • “I actually saw 1 or 2 mph increase in ball speed, which is really nice. Typically when you have a mishit, you see that number drop dramatically. But I noticed right away, I was like, ‘OK, I hit one of those a little high on the toe.’ And the numbers were almost identical to the center hit.
  • “I tend to play a little left right cut with my driver. And the first day out (practice round) with it, it was awesome. My start lines were super consistent and the shot shape was super consistent. Just to see that consistent start line and curvature no matter where you’re hitting on the face is pretty cool.”

J.T. POSTON ON HIS TSR DRIVER

  • J.T. Poston was one of the first players to get fit into a NEW TSR driver.
  • Working on the range Monday morning with Titleist Tour Rep Jim Curran, Poston saw a 2 mph jump in ball speed with his TSR3 9.0° compared to his prior generation TSi3
  • “That’s definitely further,” Poston said after making contact for the first time. “I like the sound of that a lot. Feels great. Sounds great. Looks great.”
  • Poston, who recorded his best finish (T2) of the season after rounds of 62-70-67-64, also added a new TSR2 15.0° fairway, commenting that his start lines were improved with better spin off the turf.

CHESSON HADLEY ON HIS TSR DRIVER

  • Chesson Hadley earned his best finish (5th) of the season with a NEW TSR3 10.0° driver in the bag, having gained up to 1.5 mph faster ball speed versus his prior generation TSi3.
  • Said Hadley: “When I set it down, it just looks like the same driver I’ve been hitting, but I’m getting better performance. You couldn’t ask for a better driver. I love it. I picked up a little bit of ball speed. And I mean, look at this thing. It looks like a Ferrari. That’s just so clean. You’ve got to like the way it looks and feels. And Titleist definitely has mastered both of those things. So I’m pretty juiced about it.”

TRAVELERS CHAMPION WINS WITH VOKEY WEDGES, LIGHTER SM9 LOB WEDGE

  • The winner of the Travelers Championship played a pair of Vokey Design wedges, including a new, lighter 60-degree lob wedge inspired by Titleist Brand Ambassador Patrick Cantlay.
  • Vokey Tour Rep Aaron Dill built the wedge – an SM9 60.06K with D0 swing weight – after a conversation with the reigning Olympic champion at the Byron Nelson Championship.
  • Said Dill: “He’s been in the same two Vokey 60’s for a long time, mainly the T and the K grinds. He occasionally will carry a couple of others, L and S, and he’ll determine which one best fits the conditions that week.
  • “At the Byron Nelson, he told me he’d spent a little time chipping with Patrick Cantlay’s lob wedge (62.08M @61) and said he thought the weighting was really interesting.
  • “Patrick’s pretty light – he’s about D1. Most guys are right around D5. He said, ‘I kind of like the way it felt, and I want to try it. What do you think? Should I just go down to D2 or D1?’ (He was previously at D3.) And I said, ‘Let’s take you a step further and really see if this feels the way you want.’ ”
  • Dill made him a 60.06K and 60T to his specs at D0 swingweight.
  • “By going lighter you’re able to create a little more speed, dial up the spin and hit it a little higher around the greens. He was like, ‘This thing feels so good. I feel like I can throw it through the ball a little faster, create a little more spin, and have a little more height when I want.’ ”

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS | U.S. Senior Open

Three-time major champion Padraig Harrington (Pro V1) earned his first senior major title with a one-shot victory over Steve Stricker (Pro V1x) at Saucon Valley.

U.S. SENIOR OPEN WINNER WINS WITH TSi3 DRIVER

  • The winner of the U.S. Senior Open won with a Titleist TSi3 driver in the bag, as three of the Top 6 finishers played a Titleist driver.
  • “I drove it great this week,” said the champ, who has worked with Titleist European Tour Rep Liam McDougall to dial in his TSi3 9.0° (Fujikura Ventus Black 70 X) and maximize his distance potential.
  • “Obviously I took on those two par-4s and things. The one thing that I really did this week is drive it well. Very rarely got myself in trouble.”
  • The winner of last week’s U.S. Open at The Country Club similarly gamed a TSi3 9.0° driver, having also worked with McDougall to gain distance and accuracy.
  • In the final round, the U.S. Open champ was the only player to drive the green at the 301-yard 5th hole, where he two-putted for birdie.
