Our good friends over at Vokey.com just released the latest WedgeWorks Limited Release - the TVD-R grind 50 degree wedge. Only 225 of these beauties were made available and Team Titleist caught up with Master Craftsman Bob Vokey to get the inside scoop on the "R" grind.
Here's the story from the Voke:
People always ask me how I come up with the names of the grinds on my wedges. Some of them I name for players, like the "TK" grind, some are for players' nicknames, like the "L" grind, and some are from the origin of the grind itself, like the "Tour Van Design" or "TVD."
I designed the TVD-R for the Japanese Domestic Market. The pre-worn leading edge works well with the type of grasses prevalent in Japan. When I took the design to the Japan R&D team, the original grind designation was "J" for Japan. But the team was insistent that it be changed to R. They felt that in the Japanese culture, the English letter R designated power and respect, more so than the letter J. I always try to listen to my players and my team, thus the TVD-R was born, with R as the designator on the toe. It's my newest sole grind, and I'm really pleased with how it came out.
Cheers,
Voke
