range balls fly straighter

    Is it me or do range balls fly straighter than "no range balls" frequently I go to the range and think I have eliminated the fade only to find it reappears once I am on the course. Is this because range balls spin at lower rates?

    2 reasons. They are generally about 15-20% shorter by design and aren't designed to spin better on a green - your assumption about spinning less. Not to mention most of the range balls I see have probably been flogged a couple of hundred times or more. I pay more attention to how I contact than expect on course to perform like on the range.

    Visit a range that has Titleist NXT or ProV1 Balls! Problem solved! 

    Actually, kidding aside, I prefer to visit ranges that offer a better balls than ones that have worn out ones.  Since feedback is why I go to the range I need the right tools (balls) that will offer me appropriate feedback.

    i may be lucky to have such facilities in the midwest around me but I bet if you do some homework for your area you find plenty of options.

    Maybe its the fact that ranges are wider than fairways?

    I agree with Don. You would be best off to focus on contact while hitting range balls. Now if your club has "real" golf balls on the range you can focus on things such as distance. Just a couple thoughts

    First, I agree with the comments that range balls don't go as far. In addition, the balls that make their way into the mix at a driving range probably have been the recipient of a nice knock or three from the trees and pulled out of the bag to lighten it a bit. I good friend of mine prefers to hit the local range at night when the lights are on. Since he can't see the entire flight of the ball, it allows him to focus more on the hit than distance. This in turn provides a better range session for him as he doesn't tend to over swing. Steve

    I recently went to and did a fitting at a driving range I had never been to, while doing the fitting the fitter mentioned that their range balls were actually designed to exaggerate the spin levels (left,right).

    After I hit a few balls to get a nice flight with shaft and head combo we then used some real balls to gather some data and the dispersion left to right with the real balls was much tighter. 

    I would say it depends on the range you go to and the balls they use, we were using srxn range balls (yellow with black stripes) and when getting data we used my game ball Pro v1x.

    Hi everyone, I was a little surprised to read that most of your driving ranges use really beat up balls. I guess we are a little blessed here in the Vancouver Canada area. Most of the driving ranges that I know of use newer golf balls, with Acushnet Pinnacles being the most popular -- though we do have a couple of courses that use Titleist Practice balls and another uses TM's.
