I am considering a shaft replacement (lighter) for my 910 D2 driver. I'm 67 with a SS of 88-92. Average drives are 220-230. The Bassara W 50  regular has been suggested for a little higher trajectory & distance. Does this sound like an option or should I consider something else?

    Thanks,

    Doug

    Hi Doug,

    Thanks for the post.

The Bassara W 50 does have a higher kick point to produce a higher launch and more spin than almost all other drivers. However, this will only benefit you if you need to increase launch and spin. The lighter weight could help increase distance, but make sure you do not lose any control.

It is always best to see a local fitter before you purchase new equipment, but hopefully this will point you in the right direction.

Thanks. I have a fitter (non "Big Box") in mind that I'll be seeing soon.

Besides Bubba's expert advice, the distances at those swing speeds are not out of line. Just because you are 67, a lighter shaft with a higher launch may not help. Not a bad suggestion, but w/o a field comparison to your current shaft/loft/ball, that can be a fairly expensive experiment if it doesn't help. Each golfer is different. In my case, at 64, same swing speed, a 10.5 set to 9.75 with the Ilana (predecessor to the Bassara), I was losing distance due to no roll. After a lot of (expensive) trial and error, I'm now using a 910 12 set to 12.75 with a S+ Stiff shaft and getting the 220+ consistently straight with good rollout. The two experiments you may want to try if not already is try NXT Tour or Pro-V1x, and maybe tweaking the loft up one setting. Alas, I can also offer a good deal on a 9.5 913 D2... part of not going to a fitter with a full cart and an outside fitting range. Avoid big box stores with young guys for indoor fittings - they tend to fit for them, not old guys.

The higher loft with a stiff shaft sounds like a plan Don. We'll see what Trackman says!

    Thanks

Be careful in setting expectations. The driver setup (designed by me) worked last week, but I was having issues with irons and took a lesson from my fitter. Solved that end of the problem, but now my driver (w/o the swing flaw) is going up faster than an Atlas rocket. The 913 may be off the market. ;-) So, a good fitter may also spot some minor changes to include fitting you for your swing. Then go with his/her judgment. I suffer from the syndrome that the doctor that treats himself has a fool for a patient. The jury is still out on the loft of the driver recommended by the 20-something at the BB store. It was going in the right direction with a stiffer shaft, but I should have paid attention when he compared my problem to what worked for him. At 30+ years his senior, we would never have the same problem.

    Doug,

Based on your post, I'm guessing that you are looking for more distance.  There any a bunch of variables that affect distance and the hard part is figuring our which to change to gain distance.  Simply buying a new shaft (~$150), may not produce the results you are looking for.  Maybe you need more loft, less loft, shorter shaft, etc...  As Bubba stated, this is where the professional fitter comes in to play.  They have the tools to evaluate what is going on and help you achieve the best results.  Follow Bubba's advice and see a fitter first.

  8. OP, go with Bubba's thoughts! He is usually right on the mark! I believe he used to be a fitter also...

    Good to know. Thanks Chris!

I think more loft is the answer Barry. I'll be seeing a fitter soon.

    Thanks!
