Hitting 3hybrid vs 3 wood?

  1. Hello this is my first post on any forum of any kind.  My reason being that I was fitted today for irons and woods and the club fitter recommended ditching my 3 wood and using a 19 degree 3 hybrid because I carried the 3h 260 on back to back shots according to his launch monitor.  I am asking if this is a fiscally good idea.  I would prefer not to pay the extra $220 for the 3hybrid, continue to use my 3 wood and all the while just use the current 3 iron I have in my bag.  BTW my current 3 iron shots tend to be very high in altitude whereas the 3hybrid I tried had a much more penetrating ball flight.  Any feedback on the issue would be helpful.

    Hi Miles,

    Thanks for the post.

When determining if you should keep your 3i or get the new hybrid, it is important to think about how you will use the club. If you want a club that will fly higher and have more control going into the greens, it sounds like you already have that with you current 3i. However, if you are looking for that club to be more penetrating and a better option off the tee, the hybrid may be more ideal. It really all depends on what type of shots you want to hit with the club.

    Hope this helps.

  3. Thanks for taking the time to post a response.  After reading your post it made me realize that for me, how well I can execute long 4 iron shots without losing to much gap distance between the 4 and 3 iron, a hybrid may be more useful.

I recently put a 19 degree 3h in the bag.  It has been a useful club so far.....some benefits:

1.) another option for shorter par 4s

2.) a good club on the tee box for longer par 5s that you normally won't reach in 2

3.) chipping - I am having some success chipping with it when just off the green

4.) going for a par 5 in two - when there is trouble past the green on a par 5 and I want to keep the ball in front, the 3h is a better option than the 3w

5.) as the previous poster mentioned - you get a much more commanding ball flight

i would recommend spending a couple of minutes with you local pro to get the right club/shaft combo.

well i typically use a 3 hybrid because i get a very high ball flight compared to a 3 iron, and i also use it to get over a lot of water. then i have a 17 degree fairway. I always use the hybrid if i need to carry over something

It seems the panel is missing the point as you're trying to determine which is better, a 3-Hybrid vs the 3-Fairway Wood and not a 3-iron.  I'm going to assume that you do not hit the 3-iron as far the 3-hybrid or 3-fairway, so now it becomes a gapping issue.  Normally the hybrid will be more consistent than the 3-fairway on ball striking because the shaft is shorter, it will be more useful out of the rough and fairway bunkers and it should come into greens softer with less roll-out.  The 3-fairway may provide better options off the tee and should be longer or as long off the deck in the fairway.

Fiscally it's hard to say as we're not privy to your financial situation but it seems the hybrid may be a better option for you depending on use.  First things first, get on another launch monitor and make certain that you're getting the distance with the hybrid that the aforementioned monitor showed.  Second, you should get shaft fitted to help get a higher ball flight (if that's what you want/need) with the hybrid.  Third and possibly the most important, if it's going to help your game how can you afford not to?  Sell the 3-wood to offset the cost of the hybrid and don't look back.  I carry the 19* in lieu of a 2-iron/5-wood and it works for me.  But I don't hit the hybrid as far as my 14.25* 3-wood and I prefer the 3-wood off the tee vs the hybrid when driver isn't the best option.  Also, a pre-owned 910H might be an option as well if price is really that big of an issue.  Normally you can find a well cared for 910H for less than $100 but the shaft options may be limited.

The hybrid is a useful tool but you have to ask yourself how many shots you're playing from 250+ to determine if it's the right move for you or not...

  7. good point, the OP was trying to determine the differences on the 3W vs 3H....in recent years I have replaced my second fairway wood (used to be a 4W) with a hybrid, however I did lower my 3W loft to 13.5 since I wanted a more viable option off the tee vs. the fairway.  This might be another viewpoint you may or may not have considered.  So basically I use my 913Fd 13.5 (250 yds) off the tee the majority of the time then have added a 913Hd 18 (230 yds) and 913Hd 23 (210 yds) set of hybrids.  I used to play a 15 degree 3W and 4W with a 3i.  I have found my new setup gives more forgiving options out of the rough or fairway plus I am more consistent with hybrid and more accurate compared to a 3W.  JAT!

    Good Luck!
