Hitting Ap1 Fat

  1. Dear Titleist: At the end of last season (after 3 trips to launch monitor and advice from club pro) I had ordered 714 Irons 3-GW. Unfortunately after hearing a very enthusiastic golf instructor on TV discuss how he uses a combo of Ap1 long irons & Ap2(s) mid to short, I figured I definitely could benefit from a more user friendly 3&4 Iron. So I ordered 3-4 AP1 5-GW Ap2. (My clubs are all ½ “long to get me to my D5 SW, all S300 Shafts). Four months into my golf season and I continue to hit the 3 & 4 Iron Fat. I have tried everything from ball position, choking down, added weight to the head (as it felt like I was releasing it early) and still the club head hits the ground first. Give me any of my Ap2’s and it is like having answers to the test, everything pure and effortless. (I have always played 3 & 4 Irons and hit them well 230+) So the question, is there reason why the shaft would be exhibit different characteristics at in Ap 1 vs. Ap2? Thanks

    Hi RC,

    Thanks for the question.

There is nothing about the AP1 head that would cause the shaft to perform so differently that you would notice such a difference in how you make contact with the ball.

Honestly, I would stick with the AP2's because you were fit for them and it sounds like you hit them great. We should all be so lucky!

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

  3. Thanks for reply.  Now the important ?,  If my pro places order for AP2 3-4 iron today, approximately how long would it take to get them in?
    Thanks

I have similar story. I can hit AP1's on the range after I work at it but the AP2's and even CB's with the same shaft are easier to hit solid. I hit them fat too. Unless I get a much stiffer shaft in the Ap1 I can't hit them. I went through the entire fitting matrix with Titleist at my club. Until I hit KBS CTaper in stiff could I hit that head. I hit AP2's in Nippon 950 reg in AP2's with that shaft in the AP1 it's terrible.

I got AP2's with the nippon 950 in 4,5 and 6 to complete the set  and haven't looked back. Just shows you that fitting is as much an art as a science. Doesn't matter what works for someone else

  5. Kurt, Thanks for the info, I am glad it wasn't in my head. After reading your post and thinking back, it always felt like the Ap1 was "unloading" early. Titleist, golf pro, all claim no reason why that would be. In my case, I hit the 130g shaft the best (tempo was my biggest problem), and it is the "Standard" shaft with the Ap1 and Ap2, so its not as if I re-invented the wheel with the set up.... I have since ordered the 3 & 4 in AP2 with same specs as rest of bag, so I am hoping for the best

There is a significant difference in a 4I AP1 in offset from AP2/CB (0.22 versus 0.145/0.14). I have a similar problem messing with some old SGI irons from that snake logoed company instead of my AP1s. Sounds like you don't need the aid of a more forgiving iron.

My AP2's 4,5,6 are much better for me. Probably you too.
