913 D2 with Diamana S+ 62 -- Did I make a mistake?

  1.  After testing a number of drivers over a period of 5 days (all on in-store monitors) the Titleist 913 D2 felt best.

I am 61 years old and my swing speed was registering 88-91 mph.

I tried both the Stiff and Regular flex in the Diamana S+ Blue 62. The stiff shaft felt better to me and showed much less dispersion of shots than with the R shaft.  With the S shaft I was hitting that slight draw that starts out right of the target line and comes back around to the target. The R shaft produced more hooks and a high launches (over 20 degrees).

So I bought the stiff shaft, but on the way home from the store I wondered if it was a mistake not buying the regular flex shaft based on my age and swing speed.

Do you guys think I should go back and exchange it for the regular flex ?

    Thanks,

    Steve

From what you are saying, it does not sound like you have made a mistake.  Launching a driver at 20° plus is not a recipe for good launch conditions.  Choosing a flex is not only dependent on speed, but the way you load the shaft and the feel of the shaft.  Some players like to feel the head stay with them, others like to feel a lag and then whip through.  Also, as Bubba has pointed out, there is no industry standard for flex.

    Enjoy your new driver!

  3. Cathi,

Thank you for your advice. I plan on heading out to the range today for some real feedback. I'm hoping the results will be consistent with the store swing monitor.

One other question. My new driver has a "red dot" on the weight insert -- anyone know what that means?

I noticed that Titleist sells a "weight kit" allowing the weight inserts to be adjusted. Just wondering if it's worth the extra $75 for the kit

The red dot weight is 9 grams, which means if you have a standard grip at standard length, your swingweight is around D3.  Whenever you order a metalwood, you can specify swingweight (within tolerance) and we will build your club to that swingweight at no upcharge.  Custom clubs generally take about 3 days so it may be worth the extra time if you want a specific swingweight.  The weight kit helps you experiment with swingweights.  Your fitter can help you address whether you would like a heavier or lighter swingweight.  Swingweight in and of itself, does not change launch conditions - just how heavy or light the head feels.

  5. Thank you Don and James again for sharing your experience. Its great to hear from others who had the same concerns.

Cathi thanks for the weight insert info.

    Steve -

I did a hybrid/iron fitting (at Manchester) and we ended up going to the heaver Diamana S+ 72 g shaft, independent of it being in the driver.  Helps me sleep better with the driver in that shaft.  I previously fitted myself with the Ilana A used hybrids because I'm old and slow.  Oops..

My own experience (age 64, swing speed 88-91) is that the store monitors and the visual you get for 20 feet isn't enough to be comfortable. I was launching an Ilhana (high launch shaft) too high with virtually no roll. I ended up with a 62 S+ Stiff as the ones they said fit best felt too heavy at 72-82 g. But I wasn't sure until I got out on turf and followed the flight. I'm ok with the performance of the shaft. I really expected that Stiff would be too stiff, but working with a K'ali R shaft (predecessor shaft) to compare but doesn't improve ball flight. Take it for a real world trial and see.

    Steve,

I am with Cathi. I don't think you made a mistake at all. I recently went through the same thing you just went through. Bubba suggested I not be afraid to try an extra stiff rather than the stiff. I was a bit intimidated to go extra stiff but when I tried it against the stiff I had the same results you saw. The extra stiff felt better and had much less dispersion. The stiff produced more hooks. It was like a bell went off. I found the right shaft. I would guess we went through the same feelings throughout the process.

The Stiff shaft felt right to you and produced the results you want. That is all that matters. Trust the stiff shaft and you will continue to get the results you desire. Please do not question or doubt the shaft. The minute a player starts doubting things can go wrong. Stay confident, stay positive, and enjoy this shaft.

    Play well and enjoy.
