Choosing correct loft in 913 D3

  1. I recently purchased the 913 D3 10.5 deg with Aldila phenom 70 S shaft.  I'm typically a high ball hitter but the 10.5 was the only head in the shaft I wanted.  My driver swing speed is 105-110.  I started by dropping to the D1 setting because the A1 was too high.  First 18 holes, avg distance was only 260-265 and ball seemed to be too high and short.  I then switched to C1 and I really hit the ball well.  The course was wet so I needed carry and averaged 275-280.  I do think I found the correct setting, however, I'm at the bottom with no where to go.

My question is wouldn't I be better served with a 9.5 deg head?  If I had a 9.5 head, would the B1 setting be similar to my 10.5 head at C1?

Ftr, I switched from the R7 quad and I just like the feel and look of the 913 better.

    Thanks

LOL - a big box store talked me into a 9.5 D2 with the S+ in S - since the 10.5 only came in Bassara 50.  I've set the loft up to 11 degrees.  This is the last club I will ever buy off the rack.  Without knowing your launch and spin characteristics at the latest setting, you may or may be ok with the current setup.  Are you at least as long as you were with the R7?

    James,

The 9.5* in B1 is just .25* away from the 10.5* at C1.

Now the face angle with the 10.5* C1 setting will be slightly more open (I believe a degree) so that would be a difference that might affect the shape of your shot if you switch.

I would say if you are happy with your 10.5* in the C1 setting and you are concerned about spending more money than I would probably keep what you have.

What loft was your R seven Quad? How far did you hit your R seven Quad? Is the distance you are getting from the 913 acceptable vs the R7 Quad?

If you still want to change demo the 9.5* and see if you like the shot shape and then see about a trade in credit. And always press the store to see if they can find exactly what you are looking for in the future. Most stores will find what you want or order it from Titleist.

    Hope this helps somewhat.

  4. I played a 9.5 deg loft on the R7.  But it had a draw bias so I opened the face at setup which then increased the loft some when hit square.  I like to play a straight ball but accept 5 yard draws and fades.  Back in the day I played the first burner 8.5 deg tour which was open.

I was hitting the R7 about the same distance 275-280 but not as consistent and as straight as the 913.  And definitely the miss hits on the R7 were shorter.

Thanks for the feedback.  Very helpful.

    James,

I went through a similar search as you, although I wish I had your swing speed.  I played the r7 425 for several years and was fitted for a 10.5* 910 D3 with the Aldila RIP 60A shaft, three years ago.  The optimum setting for me was at 11.25* or D4.  While the ball flight was high, I was fairly consistent at hitting fairways.  Last year, I picked up a used 913 D3, same shaft, but this time it was a 9.5*.  After one round, I adjusted it to the D4 position as well (10.25*)  Just as many fairways, but I feel a better trajectory and a little more overall distance than the 10.5 set to 11.25.  As the jump from a 910 to a 913 doesn't make this a fair apples to apples comparison, I feel the key to my success with this club is the D4 position.  Good luck with your quest

  6. I had a very interesting day on the launch monitor.

    Same shaft, Phenom 70 Stiff, my 913 D3 10.5 at C1 setting, 913 D3 9.5 at C1 and B1 setting, 913 D2 9.5 at B1 setting.

Then used Diamana White 72 Stiff in 913 D2 9.5 at B1 and C1.  I wanted to try the shaft with the lowest flight.

Results: The average of each combination were with 3-5 yards both carry and total distance.  I didn't believe the distance so I focused on launch angle and spin.  My swing speed was pretty repeatable at 106-108 mph.

The D2 spun more (approx 500 rpm on avg) with both shafts versus the D3.  All of my launch angles were between 14 and 16.  I couldn't hit it lower no matter how hard I tried.  The diamana is supposedly a lower flight than the Phenom, but I couldn't get the results on the  monitor.

Bottom line, the 10.5 913 D3 at C1 setting produced the best ball flights especially in the Phenom shaft.  The only thing I would do different is try the latest cally, png, or TM to compare.  But for now I think I have the best combination with the Titleist 913 D series.  Fairways are more important than finding another 10 yards.

    James R,

It is great to hear that you had a chance to try out different shafts, heads and settings and that you found the best result.

I am honestly not too surprised at your results with the shafts and settings. The differences can be more slight than dramatic, more fine tuning.

It sounds like you are happy with what you have. The numbers you have told us sound good to me. You have tour level distance really and if you have the accuracy you sure are starting most holes on the right foot.

Thanks for keeping us up on the progress. Someday on a Titleist Demo day you might want to try some of the exotics just to see if you find something you like more but it doesn't sound like it is too needed as of now.

Play well and keep hitting them long and straight.

There is more difference in the heads than just the face angle. You need to hit them all to see which one is best. The weighting is slightly different and therefore feel is different.

I have hit them all and found the only one that worked best for me. That is the one I got.
