Titleist says their 5 iron is 38".  Other companies say their 5 iron is 37.75".  Are these the same length and measured differently because of grip, or are titleist irons 1/4" longer?

    Jonathan,

The clubs are different lengths. There are no standards for shaft lengths amongst the equipment manufacturers.

So a png 5 iron +1/4" is the same as a Titleist 5 iron in length?

When I was fitted 3 years ago for irons, it came down to png G20 and AP1. Started with png and needed the +0.25 inch. Titleist worked best with the stock length. My previous (stock) G10s were the standard png length and wrong lie. Both the G20 and AP1 were both great improvements over the G10s. Fortunately, both png and Titleist fittings will get the right length and lie for you. Stock only fits 10% of players.

    Hi Jonathan,

To piggyback on what Kevin said there is no industry standard when it comes to length, loft or lie angle. It is mportant to know the specs of the club you are hitting when you are getting fit. Especialy if you are getting fit with a club that is from a different manufactuer than you plan on purchasing from. With our models (MB, CB, AP1 and AP2) the standard length and lie does not change but the loft does.

    Thank you

Does Titleist measure with grip on or grip off?  If it's grip on, it's probably the same length of other manufactures as the grip cap is the 1/4" difference.

We measure with the grip off and allow for an 1/8" for the grip cap.

    Thanks

Companies measure differently.  Some use a USGA method where the club is on a ruler with an angle that is set at 60* lie angle no matter what.  Others use a Mitchell ruler.  Others use an old Kenneth Smith ruler.  It's confusing but most companies with a standard 37.75" 5 iron use the USGA method.  So I have found that some manufacturers say 37.75".  Titleist and another say 38".  They all measure the same within 1/8-1/16" of an inch.  I build a lot of clubs.
