Just wanted to pass along my experience of my putter fitting at Scotty Cameron's new retail shop/fitting center, "THE GALLERY," in Encinitas, CA.

    In a word, "AMAZING!"

I was paired with veteran fitter, Spencer, who trained under the master, Scotty, and has over 20 years experience.

The set up, evaluation and studio where I got fitted - one on one - with Spencer was exactly like the tour players experience.

Spencer's evaluation, knowledge and searing insight into the step by step, from the ground up,  "Art Of Putting," was beyond all my wildest expectations.

    The two hours flew by.

This is a must stop along with the tour club fittings made available by Titleist.

It will change your game forever.

Thanks to Spencer, Scotty and the entire Team Titleist family for making these Tour fittings available to all of us!

One other great aid in the fitting, besides the amazing tech tools of computers and cameras and weight sensors, was the alignment line on the golf balls.  It served two purposes.  1). It showed you automatically if your putter was dead square and impact.  and 2) and probably more importantly, was the sheer joy of watching that line on the ball go straight to the hole.

If there is anyway the good people at Titleist could find a way to offer their balls with the alignment line already on the balls, it would certainly save many of us the time and frustration of trying to paint in on ourselves.  I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm horrible at it.  Sharpie ink everywhere!

For those who don't want the line, there could be balls with it not on automatically during the manufacturing process.

    Just my humble opinions.

    Thanks again!

I like the idea of a pre printed equator line on some pro V's. Perhaps just put them on the ones that come in the practice boxes. I make a thick alignment line over the "PRACTICE" label with a marker anyway.

    Vern,

What was the outcome ? Did you keep your old putter, or did the fitting move you into a new Scotty?

    Bruce,

Great question.  And the answer was not what I expected at all.  But truly what I needed.

I had 3 goals going into my fitting.  1). Find the perfect Cameron putter for me.  2). Clear my head of all unnecessary and score killing putting thoughts. 3).  Have total confidence in my putter and ability to put the ball in the hole.

What I got after my fitting was this:  For me, it wasn't my putter at all, although I did get Spencer's #1 choice for my game, which I will mention later.  What I got was that it was fatal flaws in the basics of my putting that were killing my low scores.  And those flaws were simple fundamentals that without the keen and expertise of Spencer's insight, I never would have figured out on my own.

The cameras and high tech computer equipment in the putting studio, along with Spencer's feedback, knowledge and correction, led to this conclusion.  All five Cameron putters I currently own will work for me.  If he had to pick one to purchase, it was the one putter I  have had my sights on for months.  The new Future X5.  Something about that putter both Spencer and I honed in on as a great choice for me.  The tour model was my dream putter but way out of my price range, $2,500.  So I either have to make the senior tour or become a movie or rock star.  The other option is wait until it's released.  Which I just read Cathi's post it will be on October 31st!  YEAH!

So in a long winded answer, I got much, much more than I bargained for in my 2 hour fitting.  A lifetime of putting knowledge about the basic fundamentals of what great putters do, think and feel from a master fitter and the right flat stick for my game.

Thanks again, Bruce for the question.  And thanks again to Spencer Reynolds and the entire Scotty Cameron and Team Titleist teams!

  6. I, too, would like to know the outcome.

Getting properly fit for your putter is just as important as any other club in the bag. Arc. Weight. Loft. Lie. Shaft. Grip, and so on.

I can fit anybody for a putter. However, that "Tour Like" experience is top notch. I'd love to see more studios. Say, at the Regional Centers, possibly the Advanced as well. I'd be more than happy to run one in the Columbus area. With the Tour events, very elite golf clubs, golf enthusiast, etc.; as well as the many people willing to travel; I can guarantee that it would be a huge success.

David, I feel getting fit for a putter is the most important fitting you can have.  The most important thing is the mental aspect as putting is so mental, as you well know. It's not what you add, but what you take away which makes a great player with the flat stick. All the tech equipment that went into my fitting can't be done with the naked eye.  The margin for error is too small.  I agree more putting studios would be great across the country, but more important is the training that goes into be a master fitter.  It's not all about specs, it's the marriage between the fitter and the person being fitted in a one on one session for many hours that really hone in on making the experience unique and a truly person fitting.  Spencer fit me one small step at a time.  He dissected every part of "The Art of Putting," then put me back together with the right tool I needed, which I can't wait to get my hands on October 31st.  Thanks, David!

  8. Vern, did you decide to change putters?

I will purchase the Future X5 when it comes out on October 31st, Chris.  With my new adjustments made by Spencer, I've been using all my old Camerons and they are all beautiful to putt with.  The eye opener in this process, which I'm sure you know well, is that it's not the putter at all, but the person putting with it.  I feel it's the emotion attached to a certain model, feel, texture, etc, that makes a difference.  If you think you're going to play/putt better with a certain model line, you will.  For me, the putter fitting gave me the absolute confidence I had the best fundamentals and basics of putting, and at the end, I had the best tool to make my putting the best it can be.  All doubt has been erased from my thought patterns and now I only go through the mental check list Spencer gave me, which will become second nature.  Thanks for the reply, Chris!

    Hey Vern,

I've been wondering about the fittings there as well, do they custom a new putter for you or make adjustments on your current scotty?  Also, do they do the custom shop work as well(paint fillings, custom stamps etc.)?

Another great question.  What they do is give you specs, Rob, and you order you own putter to those specs..  I would be so great if they custom made a putter for you with paint filling, custom stamping, on the spot, but this is a retail facility with a putting theatre, it's not like Scotty's main studio where they manufacture clubs.  I got my specs and will order my putter to those specs then send it to the custom shop for the bells and whistles.

Saw a great tip last night on The Golf Fix. Get a PVC elbow pipe at your local hardware store where the golf ball will sit halfway down. Then take your sharpie and just draw a line around the edge of the pipe onto the ball.
