    Hello,

I am a 17 year old, playing as a 9 handicap. I have only been playing for about a year. I am currently using TM r7 (4-PW, R Flex) and have seen a decline in performance over the past 6 months. I think this may have something to do with the shafts being too weak for me. I hit the ball pretty far for my size and think I may be moving into a stiff shaft, but I still have regular flex on my irons. If the decline in performance has to do with shaft flex, I am sure it is because of my significant growth over the past 6 months. I am well aware that the only way to really find out what shafts to play is to get fit, but I don't really have the money to do so at this time. Does anyone have any suggestions or tips to find out what shafts I should be playing?

How far do you hit a 7 iron?  150 yards is at the borderline of regular and stiff.

You can always try the demo clubs at a golf retailer.  They'll let you on a launch monitor at no cost.  You can check your dispersion and distance.  Too whippy of a shaft also causes your shot pattern to have more dispersion in direction and a higher ball flight.   Too stiff of a shaft has more range variation and a very low ball flight plus the feel is horrendous.

Also, if you had a height increase, it may just be a lie angle adjustment ($5 per club).  Do your balls tend to fade now?

I used stiff shaft from time I was 19 (1976) until 2006 (didn't play a lot between 1993-2003 with two 3 year dry spells).   I went to regular shafts in 2006 when starting up.  I used to carry 3-4 woods and 2-PW irons with a dual wedge until 2006. I used an 11* fairway wood 2006-2007. Carried a 975D driver (44.5") between 2007-2009 and a G2 between 2009-2011.  I went to a 13* draw driver with senior flex in early 2011 (it is also cut from 45.75 to 44.5 so that may stiffen the shaft slightly).  Everything else in my bag is regular flex.

    I hit a 7 iron about 170-176 yards.

That would be a stiff or even maybe x flex. Have a fitter determine that.

also, if Kyle had a significant growth spurt, simply changing the loft might not be sufficient. He actually might need longer clubs. However, I realize that with limited $$, that's probably not in the cards right now.

Not sure about your current shaft weight, I thought TM may be using 85-90 gram shafts??? It looks like you are in a stiff flex. I hit my 7 iron (carry 167-172) and was just fitted with the Project X Pxi 6.0 shaft(112g). The KBS tour stiff would also be a lower cost option(120g). HOWEVER not sure what the additional shaft weight would do with your timing. I recommend going to your local Golf store and hitting several different shaft options on the simulator and see what fits you best.

    Kyle,

I'd really like to help, but, unfortunately, it's hard to fit someone, recommend anything, and so on; online. One thing to keep in mind is that every club/shaft is different. One companies S-Flex may play more like an R shaft from another company. Launch angles vary. Weight varies. Total swing weight. If you're going through growth spurts, you may also need to have your grips/size checked out. Make sure your lie angles are perfect. Lofts.

You should call your local Titleist fitter(s) and ask about their fittings. Even if you have to save up a little extra, being properly fit by a Titleist Fitting Pro would make sure that you'd have the absolute perfect clubs/shafts/specs, etc., for you and your game.
