Come spring, I have decided it's time for new Vokeys.  I really like the looks of the SM5s.  Here is my question:

The Titleist reps never seem to have different length wedges, just standard length and stock shafts at demo days.  At least that is the case where I live.  The golf retail stores also only carry stock wedges.  I feel like buying wedges is like throwing darts.  Where can I get fitted for Vokeys?  Where can I try some of the different shaft options?  Should my wedge specs and shafts match my other irons (kbs tour, 2 up, 1/2 long)?

Thank you and happy new year!

  2. Nick, great question!

I play DG TI X100 in my irons +1/2" and I extend the wedges the same length over standard. However I do play one flex softer for the wedges that I will not be taking full swings with such as 52, 56 and 60. So thus in my set I use DG TI S400.

I was fit with Bob Vokey last fall and this was the configuration he recommended.  I used my existing wedges then hit balls using the different grinds in standard length I believe...

    I hope this helps!

    Happy New Year!

Just answering part of your post, but: I've gone with a slightly softer shaft (S200 instead of S300) in my 56 degree (highest loft I carry).  Makes a difference, I think, in shots around the putting surface.

  4. Just did the same thing... All new SM5's for 2015. I go to a fitter who fits many current PGA tour players (major winners) and he matches my wedges to the same specs as my irons in terms of degrees upright, shaft length and grip width. I would 100% recommend going to a certified fitter to make sure you are getting the most appropriate lofts and grinds for your set and game.

However, looks like Bob Vokey himself may recommend (based on this other response and his fitting experience with BV) a different philosophy with regard to a less stiff shaft for your wedges. I use all my wedges for full swing shots and wouldn't want to have a different flexes in these shafts considering they are scoring irons and used a ton in these situations. So, not sure if I have flawed thinking or if I need to perhaps rethink!

I recently saw where BV recommends new wedges every 60 rounds (if i remember correctly) or so for amateur players, especially the one(s) you use most often. I am now in the habit of replacing once a year or so for my most commonly used wedges but just replaced the whole lineup a few weeks ago for a fresh start to this year!

    Fire at pins!

    Hi Nick,

I agree with the other posters. When I would fit individuals for their wedges I often made sure the GW specs matched the exact specs of the irons. This club is meant primarily for full shots and thus should have similar specs to the irons. As for the other wedges, many times I did fit individuals into a softer shaft for enhanced feel, but that is very much player preference. I did find most golfers preferred to keep the same length and often went slightly flatter in the lie angle.

As you know it is best to see a local fitter, but hopefully this gives you some direction.

Thank you, everyone, for taking the time to help me out.  Some great things to consider.  My vokeys now are 50, 54 to 55, and 58 to 59.  I like the idea of stiff in the 50 and maybe regular in the 54 and 58.  Lots to think about.

Have a great 2015 and I hope all your goals are achieved.  Thanks again!
