I purchased new custom Titleist 712 AP1's with Graphite shafts 1" over in length, 3 degrees upright, a couple years ago. I've never quite felt they fit quite right even after getting fit by the NW Regional Titleist Rep. Even though I custom ordered them 1" over they turned out to be 1" shorter than my previous clubs which I found out later had a 1" longer length as a standard for their clubs. So after three years I finally went to the PGA Tour Store in Chandler, AZ and had them install a 1" plug in the graphite shaft to lengthen them an additional 1" and had new Midsized Golf Pride Tour grips installed. After playing a couple rounds and have now adapted to the changes all I can say is...... WOW!!! I played the best round I've played in years. And it appears I've picked up 5 to 10 yds per iron. Was overshooting pins the first round and dropped down a club the second round and all was cool. I haven't noticed any loss in accuracy, in fact as my confidence built I was hitting them straighter and longer. Using Titleist DT Solo golf balls I was getting good stick on the greens with the shorter Irons too. I am one happy Camper. PS: I am a 74 year old golfer who winters in AZ.

Dean , first i must ask how tall are you??  I"m 6'4" and my AP1 710s are +1/2"  2* up...  i'm glad it worked out for you but why did it take so long for you to redo your clubs?  Maybe i should go longer on my irons this year (waiting on  716s) to come out. P.S.. glad to hear you're still getting it done   at 74 years young.............MADGOLFER

I'm only 6' 3 but have longer legs than normal for that height I guess. I had my clubs made 3 degrees upright and now that I've added the 1" more to the shafts that is still not far off. I thought I was going to have to reduce that but I'm hitting my irons so much better I don't think I will mess with it.

There are a couple reasons why I didn't add the extra length, one was the Titleist representatives on this forum discouraged it. Recommending new shafts only which made no sense to me when the cost was so high to do so. I would have purchased a whole new set instead of doing that. Maybe that was the objective.

Secondly, I tried to convince myself that I could train myself to just adapt to the shorter shaft but I had three wedges that were the correct length so I was always adapting.

Thirdly, I really didn't want to waste perfectly good original midsized Golf Pride Tour grips that did not yet need to be replaced. They needed to be replaced this year.

And Fourthly I hadn't really found a convenient golf store that offered adding the 1" plugs at a reasonable cost. The PGA Tour store prices in Chandler, AZ posts their prices on a very visible board in the store and I found those prices to be very reasonable. And they were able to do the whole job, 1" plugs and new grips in a one day lag time. That was really nice because the store is some distance from my winter residence here in AZ and was going to be in that area anyway due to other business.

Now that I have had it done, I wish I had done it earlier. All previous excuses to delay the inevitable were exactly that .... excuses. What has happened that has surprised be a bit is I have now developed so much more confidence with my irons that I'm having to back off an iron or two for most distances. Just this Friday played at a course that I have played for several years and was again overshooting the pins because I hadn't dropped down at least one club on the approach shots.

I'm now a club longer with my three wedges(G, S, L) which I didn't change and I think it is due to an increase in confidence on the swing that I have gained because of the change in the rest of my irons. All irons and wedges now have a consistent step in length. I don't have to adapt as much any more. I don't worry as much about sculling my Titleist irons any more. It's a confidence thing.

I've had several of my playing mates comment on the improvement in my game. Feels good. Wish I would have done it right to begin with but more importantly fixed them earlier. I knew something was wrong but kept blaming myself. We get too soon old and too late smart! :-)
