I play off 3 and I have had the same irons (Titleist 735 CM Combo) for 10 years now and I admit, I'm not a big hitter with my irons, 6 iron - 150 yds, so I went along to my local driving range which has a 'Direct Golf Store' attached who offer free custom fitting etc so I decided to give it a go and see what they can recommend for more distance.

I tried a number of irons and the only decent iron I liked and hit well was the Titleist AP2 which were priced at £649.00.

The pro checked my swing speed, loft, lie, length etc and went away to punch my stats into a computer and came back with what the computer suggested I should be using.

After checking my swing speed (79) the pro suggested that I should be using a "regular shaft.and I should be using the same shaft (S300) but when he came back with the results, the computer advised I should be using the same shaft (S300)

I tried a number of irons and the only decent iron I liked and hit well was the Titleist AP2 which were priced at £649.00

I hit the 6 Iron EXACTLY the same as my own 6 iron so after all that, I guess I've saved myself £649 but I was never given the chance to try a regular shaft so, my question is, who is right, the pro or the computer?

  2. If your fitter was an Authorized Titleist Fitting Pro, then I'd trust the fitter. 79 isn't bad. The S-300 is a pretty stout shaft. There are pros who use those (or the TI S400). The regular flex would probably be best for you. The AP2's are great clubs. If you're a 3, you may actually benefit from the great forgiveness of the AP's. You can still work the ball. Better distance control.

Some times, people just look at a couple of "numbers" (carry/total distance, ball speed, club head speed, etc.) and there's way more into it than just a couple of numbers. Such as: on the course, you hit your 735 6 into a green 150 a little inside and it shoots 6-7 yards off line, that could be trouble. Whereas same shot, with your AP2, you may be 2-3 yards off, which isn't near as bad.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

    Hi David,

Thank you very much for your reply, it's greatly appreciated.

I have since been back to the range and decided on sticking with my 735 CM's as to be honest, I'm hitting them exactly the same as the AP2 Demo so I am probably saving myself £649!

I have decided that I am going to upgrade my driver as I tried the new 915 D3 with a 65g Diamana Shaft in Stiff Flex and.......WOW, this is absolutely awesome. I hit 50 balls with this and every ball was straight as an arrow, I was astonished by the results on this!!

I only started playing golf in 2001 and I was given my first handicap which was 14, a year later I was off 8 and since then I've come down slowly.

After winning all of the competitions I built up enough credit to purchase my first decent set of irons which were the Titleist 762 and since then I've been a huge Titleist fan!

I've been really lucky as since 2001 I've managed 7 holes-in-one all with Titleist Clubs, one being on a par 4 (press releases attached below)

    All the best David

I would re-visit another fitter if you are still asking yourself the question of whether to upgrade or not. Sounds like you have come a long ways since you have started, great progress.

Interesting that in the article they say you holed your fifth ace with an 8-iron from 156 yards, you may want to figure out why those clubs are going the same distance :)

    Hey Blake,

Thanks for the reply buddy, you have just reminded me that my first set of Titleist irons were the 762's which I loved and these are the ones that helped me get my handicap down to 3, then I upgraded to the 735 CM's thinking these will help my game but I'm now thinking about trying to search for a set of the old 762's or would this be a step backwards?

The hole-in-one I hit from 156 yards was from an elevated tee, about 80 feet high and it was a summers day (club championships) so I'm guessing why this carried a bit further than normal.......I did hit it sweet though haha.

    Mark,

You're welcome. Not a problem. Enjoy your 915!

I assume you meant to say R300 as the regular versus the S300 shaft?  If you were in the US and had a certified Titleist nearby, I'd run not walk to the next fitter.  An experienced fitter will listen to the buyer as well as the visual of the ball flight and correlation with launch, descent, and carry in offering shaft choices.

I also play AP2 with S300 and I like the stiffer feeling which gives me a little more control on the club. I think I can also go with a regular shaft, but I heard it not only depends on the swingspeed but also on the transition. If you swing smooth and the swingspeed is not too high, an R300 can fit, but for me it's more important to have a bit of extra control because length without direction isn't good on the course. I would try it again and perhaps choose another fitter.
