Irons going left

When the 714 series irons came out I had decided it was time to be fit into a set. So I was fit into a set of AP1's at a Titleist demo day by a Titleist rep at plus +1 length and 2.5 degree upright lie. I had been fit previously 4 years earlier and all was the same except length. I have really been working on hard on my swing since January of 2014 my grandson has taken up the game and I purchased him lesson since I was a self taught hacker. And while taking him for lessons I have learned a lot about my own swing and have become a much better ball striker and player in general. I always struggled with a slice my entire life never able to shape a shot. Now I am drawing the ball like I always dreamed of, gained distance, and was pretty accurate. Late last year and into this spring I am hitting my new 915 driver and fairways spot on with a nice little draw. But my irons are going left most of the time, 5-8 yard draw but left before draw kicks in. On a 165 yard 7 iron I'm 15 - 20 yard left should I be refitted since my swing has changed ? Or just aim right. I am new to this draw swing having never hit a draw until now maybe that's how much movement a 165 yard draw generates.

I'm having a similar issue. I found I used to cheat a little on my setup, closing the face just a tad to try to slow down a slice. I now square the face to my line so that the ball now flies on my intended line. Still need to compensate a little more on my line to account for the draw. You may also need to use alignment sticks, your setup may be a little further left than you think. Because of the swing change, this may affect your lie, and getting that checked is another possibility.
  3. Had the same problem.  Only time I could hit straight is when I lined up playing the draw so that it would hopefully hit the target.  However, you guessed it, it would go straight and right of the target.  So next time, I would line up at the target and guess what happened.  I would get the draw back.  It was my grip the entire time.  Holding the club with a strong grip with the right hand can be one of the culprits.  As soon as you are at impact you roll that right hand over and with it the club head.  Try rolling the right hand around until you can see the knuckle or it actually feels uncomfortable to some degree.  Of course, don't feel uncomfortable but hate the right hand sort of speak.  Now you have two shots.  Straight one and you can draw the ball when you are in the trees.

    Dwayne,

Without a video or picture sequence it would truly be hard to tell you what to work on, given there are so many parts to an individuals swing and they are all unique. The best advice I can offer comes from one of your last sentences, and it is to not simply "live" with a mis-hit and aim a certain direction to compensate. At that point, all you are doing is hurting yourself from becoming better, or at least more fluid. One could argue that you can play a shot like that after a ton of practice, maybe even score well, but for the sake of your sanity and your play for the years to come I would recommend you take the time to fix the issue.

I wouldn't say your swing has "changed," but I would say that it has likely become less consistent.

You will have a lot more fun in the long run, trust me.

    Hit them well!

A couple of possibilities.  The irons may be too upright, that will promote the left movement, you could be coming over the top a bit. I would recommend you have your local pro give you a lesson to see if it is your swing or the clubs need a little tweaking.

    Eccleston,

I had same problem issue was grip was to strong. I needed to move my left had a fraction and right had a little over. It felt very strange for a while.  It might simply be your grip probably worth having it checked before new clubs

    Dwayne,

I had a similar experience. I was fitted for a pair of 714 AP2's last summer by a Titleist rep and he recommended +1"/up 2*. I am tall (6'2") and compensate for my height with a steeper swing. The lie adjustment helped correct my tendency to miss to the right - sometimes I go over the top or rush my tempo, which produces a push or a slice. After hitting the irons for about 6 months, I started to miss left more often and instead, developed an occasional draw or pull, which scares me because my natural swing produces a power fade. I spent a lot of time at the range with my instructor and we concluded that both tempo (because of the longer clubs) and ball position (also due to longer clubs) had slightly changed over time, leading to the occasional draw/pull. I was able to work through it and have my trust fade back. I hope you can figure it out!

    Good luck!

Dwayne- I would highly recommend a check up- it sounds like a lot could have changed with your swing- a certified Titleist fitter will be able to determine what changes, if any - would help you. I was fitted for a 3 wood 1 1/2 years ago and was just fitted for a 915 FD last week. I was surprised by the findings and am looking forward to a new 915 FD. Trust me, a lot can change in a year!
