Custom shaft - swing weight

  1. I was fitted for AP2 714 irons at ClubChampion where they really tried to sell me on the better results I would get from having them build the clubs, as opposed to ordering through my club (i.e. having Titleist build the clubs).  They claim that that my specs will be matched EXACTLY in each iron in the set, whereas Titleist has lower tolerances for loft/lie/swing weight variances.  They also emphasized the shaft PUREing.  While I believe them re: Titleist having tolerances in their building process, I'm not convinced all this is worth so much extra money.  Thoughts?

With that said, the fitter recommended a Dynamic Gold TT Tour Issue S400 shaft for me (+.25").  I was curious...if I order from Titleist, what will the swing weight be on the AP2 irons with this shaft at +.25"?  ClubChampion is saying the iron I was hitting was a D6.  What they are NOT being clear about is how they got the club I hit to be D6 (i.e. did they add weight, or was the higher swing weight just a result of the longer shaft?).

Note: I think I was actually hitting +.5", but they are saying .25" is probably better, which is probably true since I play standard in my current irons.

Hi Nathan,  At 1/4" over on that shaft (assuming that you are using a standard grip), we can build from D2.5 to D5.  If you want it at D3 or D4, I would specify that on your order  and we will build to that swingweight.  The swingweight tolerance is 1/2 swingweight within the set.  Although there is an upcharge for that shaft, there is no upcharge for the length or building to swingweight.

  3. Thanks Cathi, that is very helpful.  I would be using a standard grip, but with an extra wrap of tap.  Would that lower the swing weight?

A follow up question for you.  What is the swing weight range you can build on a standard length DD S400 Tour Issue shaft?  I was hoping I could order at D4, but my club pro is telling me that he called Titleist and was told that D2.5 is the highest you can go with this shaft in standard length on the AP2's.

We should be able to build to D4 - they will have to put notes in the order.
