I've toyed with using longer shafts in my irons and have found it didn't give me extra distance and may be costing me control of my shots. It got me to thinking that perhaps the 44.5" standard shaft in my Titleist D2 might work better at 44, 43.5 or even 43". Since I don't want to cut the shaft, I may build up the grip on the lower end to allow me to grip down without a change in feel.

Has anyone tried this or found a shorter driver is providing them more distance through an improved "smash factor"?

Fred, the most logical answer is to see a fitter, but that is not always possible. That is a tough area to tackle without launch monitor numbers to back it up. I myself play a 1/2" shorter shaft in my 915D3 driver and 913F fairway. I have found that by using a shorter shaft, it allows me to hit the center of the club face more often. And by doing this, my smash factor increased. Before deciding to cut down the shafts, I made a mark on my grips with a sharpie so I could choke down 1/2" and see how I struck the ball. Sounds like you are on the right path with doing a build up and choking down. However, that will also change your swing weight as you add tape. So it could skew your results. Good Luck. #Liv2Golf
