Graphite Shafts in irons

    I was curious as to what expectations we should have when trying graphite shafts vs steel in irons?

    The reason I ask is that this weekend I tried the Kuro Kage and the XP 95 shafts in the AP1 irons. The KK shaft resulted in 4 mph additional ball speed. Of course, I need to try these outside in real conditions to see ball flight and spin. Nevertheless, I was surprised by the difference in ball speed off the face. Is that kind of difference normal?

    I hit alot better with the graphite shafts. Not sure about extra distance, but they feel better.

    I tried graphite shafts in my irons, was not happy with control over shots. Hit the ball well and it would start at the target but drop off left or right slightly. I couldn't control which way. Originally thought it was my swing but when I switched back to iron shafts, the drop off left or right disappeared. The graphite felt much better, less stress on the joints, but control was also less. I now hit AP1's with the XP 95 shafts and I am quite happy with them. Distance and control in one.

    Hi Steve,

    There are a lot of factors that go into a properly fit set of clubs, and as you mentioned launch and spin are two very important numbers to consider. Some players will obtain better feel and launch conditions with graphite and some with steel. This is simply player dependent. The increase in ball speed you experienced is most likely due to the lighter weight of the Kuro Kage graphite shafts versus the XP 95. Please keep in mind that even though ball increased so too could spin, and if the spin rate is too high it could cause the ball to peak at higher than optimal apex and result in a loss of distance. The only way to know which option works best for your game is to go through a fitting.
