If your looking for titleist irons the ap1's would be a good choice. They are very forgiving and also very long.

The AP1s with the shafts fitted for you. A good fitter might find some swing tweaks that with the new irons that may drop your handicap another 5 strokes or so.

I started playing AP2s in Nov 2011 when the 712s were first released. I was an 11-12 handicap, and concerned they may be too much club for me. They weren't. I now play between 9-10 index and recently purchased AP2 716s. They are even easier to hit consistently. In fact, I have never hit my irons so well. I was fit by a Titleist fitter for both sets. Try the AP2 and AP1 before deciding. They are both great sets of irons for different reasons. If one is better for you, you will realize it as soon as you spend some time with both models. Getting fit is the key. I ended up with AP2s through my 7 iron and AP1s in my 5 & 6 iron, all spec'ed the same. Perfect for me. I miss my smaller blade-headed AP2 6 iron, but there is no denying that I hit the AP1 more consistently.

The best answer to any question about "which clubs are best for me", is to go get fit. Personally, I had my mind set on the 716 CB's. I went to a local golf shop and tried the whole Titleist range with different shafts and was fit for the 716 AP2s. For best results, get fit for your new clubs. Get the most out of your investment.

Your golf game is generally divided into four departments: tee shot, fairway shot, pitch/chip shot and putt. Each department contributes to your handicap score. Irons are usually used in fairway shot. If you are good in this department, you may choose the irons that you are comfortable with.

Many do not perform pitch/chip shot well enough. Some regularly find OB on the tee shot. These shortcomings affect their handicap score. Having high handicap score due to the above factors does not mean one is not good at fairway shot i.e. iron play.

Bear in mind that high handicappers and beginners are two different terms although beginners are normally high handicappers.
