  1. I currently play a set of titleist DCI 981s and am looking to upgrade to a set of AP2 712s. I am 6'2" tall and the wrist to floor measurement is 36".

I measured my grip size and was recommended to go with a midsize grip based on wrist to tip is 7.5" and longest finger is 3.25" + glove size is cadet large.

By my local PGA professional I was recommended to go with a +0.25-0.5" over standard length.

What I need advice on is based on my current clubs compared to the AP2 lengths. For example, according to titleist.com my 981 DCI 5 iron is 37.75" and the AP2 standard length is 38". Thus, it seems that the clubs are now made 0.25" longer than they were when I bought that set back in the year 2000.

My question is should I go with the standard length club then because the newer AP2 irons are already 0.25" longer than my current club? Or do I need to go longer on top of the current standard?

    Thank you for your time!

Go with what feels comfortable. You could probably benefit from a little longer clubs. The best advice I could give you is to go get fitted professionally. Having the right right set of clubs that fit your body and swing type is one of the most important things.

    Hi CRipperda,

Did the fitter also go into the lie angle based on your swing? Normally going with a longer length will require a more upright lie angle. But if they didnt think it is necessary, it may mean you have a flatter swing than before or it maybe compensating for a slightly open face angle. Or maybe you just have a tendancy to catch it off the toe side.

My point is, length should be considered along with other factors when fitting. If you look up the DCI 990's, those were short .25" than standard because of how the flight was affected by the hosel weight. Since the AP2s have such crazy amounts of low CG, longer shafts may help keep an ideal flight while also increasing distance.

Bottom line, if you trust your certified fitter, go with the adjustment off the current standard as that is what was recommended.
