I have hit the dreaded part of getting older. Retired last year and still remain active but this golf season I have found that I have lost 2- yards from my driver. Rest of the bag has stayed relatively the same for distance. Bought new 716 irons last year and upgraded to graphite shafts and regular flex after playing with Project X stiff shafts on my AP2's for many years. That was an adjustment but love the flight and feel. Did an extensive fitting for these before settling on these specs. I am not a "Settler", my 714 D2 just has not been performing. Current driver shaft is a 60 gram Diamana Regular flex. We have a couple of demo days coming up in our area soon and was looking to try a different shaft. Any ideas? I confess I tried the TM M1 and hit it 20 yards better, but I am an old Titleist guy and want to stay that way. Help!

Well John, welcome to the Old Timers Club. Membership in this organization really stinks. Sounds like you're going through what I did a few years ago. I found a fitter who has a TrackMan unit. We went through a lot of combinations before we found some best choices. There's a lot to getting the club head, shaft, grip, and ball combination just right for optimum performance.

I have hit the M1 and it is a very fine driver. I'm about to do my spring TrackMan session and will probably go thru a driver evaluation. If there is one that would give me an additional 20 yards and at least as good as my shot dispersion with my 915, I'd seriously consider going with whatever gave me that performance.

2 yards or 20 yards? If it's 2 yards, I wouldn't be concerned with that during this time of the year in the Mid West. It's still cool most days, the ground is soft (so little roll), plus the wind is usually blowing pretty good. Now 20 yards, yes I would be more concerned. I still believe that the factors I mentioned earlier are contributing to your distance loss, but before making any rash changes or purchases, let the weather stabilize so you can get a more accurate reading on what your driver distance is, then work with your fitter to choose a course of action.

Hello!! John H., I am a 64 year old golfer that has been playing this crazy game we call GOLF for some time.Notice you said that you are a TITLEIST guy.. Don't blame you, I am too. Just a thought, didn't read which ball you hit and the degree on the TITLEIST driver. May take some time to adjust to the new clubs and especially, new driver. BE PATIENT, don't over think. Just use your given abilities and it will HAPPEN. Just a thought for an ole' golfer like MYSELF. Have FUN!! DRH

John, golfers are the least affected by age than any other sport. The amount of "distance lost" is nothing compared to the skill sets lost in every other sport. Count your blessings that you're still playing at the level you're playing. Golf is the only sport you can play your entire life. Enjoy the game.

You know 70 is approaching in six months and I do not worry to much about distance anymore. If I hit the ball in the middle of the fairway and it is around the 230-250 range I am very happy. I am still hitting my 7 iron from the 140-150 range depending on how well I am striking the ball. I stopped worrying about distance with clubs. I moved up to the seniors tees and am having a blast. My handicap varies between a 9 and a 12. I love my Titleist 915D2 and it's flexibility. I have played with the different settings and am comfortable with a neutral at 8.75 and I play the Black Rogue stiff shaft. This is what my fitter recommended as I never buy a club with being fitted. Also, I have played all the brands (except swoosh) and finally found a home with Titleist about six years ago and here I will stay.

Finding the right shafts will make up for some of the lost yardage, but still feel maintaining your accuracy is key factor. Demo Days will allow you to experiment with a number of shafts. I've lost 10 yards since turning 65 but seem to be more accurate with both woods and irons. Guess that's the good news and bad news of getting older.

Hello John H. How lucky are you ? You are retired and still have the ability to go out and play such a great game. I'm 58 and still can hang with the youngsters, once in a while. I'm a Titleist man for life. The 915 D2 with some combination will do you just fine. Just find the right fitter. Good Luck!
    Play Well,
    Steve S.
