Too much shaft flex for me?

  1. Hello, 1st time post here. I am getting back into the game seriously again after about 20 years, since high school. I'm a 13 handicapper for now. I purchased my current set of clubs on Craigs List which are R flex shafts for all. On a good drive, I hit the ball about 270 yards. I am confident with my driver, but my fairway woods have been terrible. I seem to hit a wild hook almost no matter what I try. I normally hit a natural draw. Can this be a result of the shafts being too flexible? It's definitely not my swing! ;-) I am hoping to get some basic knowledge before I go to a club fitter. Thanks! -Brian

  2. It sounds like they are too flexible since that is about what I hit my drives and I use X Flex. However, you may want to go to a fitting just to be certain but it sounds like you are a Stiff Flex most likely...
  3. A certified club fitting maybe the way to go. Flex does not have anything to do with left or right. Flex has to do with trajectory. Too flexible and the ball balloons and you loose distance. Too stiff and the ball comes off flat and again you loose distance. I've always been told to go with the most flexible shaft that you can play with. Yes my days of XX stiff are long over. Good luck to you.....

Yes, totally agree with a Phillip I too tryed both steel and Graf shafts found the more flex the higher I hit it and lost distance in most cases.after visiting a fitter and several different combos found the rite shaft for me so get fitt best option I think as well

Same yourself a lot of time, money and be confident that you are playing exactly what you need. Find a fitter or you will always be wondering if there is something out there that you could play a little better. Then after the fitting if things are still a little off take a few lessons. In the long run you will enjoy the game much more when you start playing better.

The equipment has changed significantly in 20 years. You should go see your local PGA pro for a fitting and a lesson. There might be a flaw in the swing that the driver is masking, but it shows with the irons. A good hour or two with your pro should do the trick.

Yep. You need to go with S-flex, at least in your fairway woods.
  9. Hey thanks for all the feedback! My friend gave me a couple of his S flex fairway woods, and guess what? Still more of a hook than a draw. I think both a club fitting and a few brush up lessons would be the way to go once I can afford it.

On the range, I noticed that if I opened up the face just a few degrees that the ball would straighten out. I'm wondering if I've just gotten used to looking at a closed club face with my fairway woods, and now what feels like a slightly open face actually is on target.

BTW I'll have to check out the settings on this discussion so I can be notified of replies. Thanks again for the feedback!
