First post on this site. After 20--yes, 20!--years of using the same set of DCI Blacks with the early original Rifle shafts @ 6.3, I was recently fitted by a Titleist rep. After a lot of experi-mentation on my own with a launch monitor indoors with different shafts, and then some more on an outdoor range, I bought a set of slightly used T-MB irons. The rep thought I should get a lighter shaft because of my age (67). I play to about a 7 but it would be less if I played as much as I practice.
I liked the feel of the KBS Stiff C-taper lites at 110 grams. They felt like graphite and had a better ball dispersion on the monitor compared to a Stiff C-Taper. My thinking was that if 110 grams was good, maybe 95 would be better. The T-MBs I bought have the XP-90 shaft Stiff at 95 grams. Just a few practice sessions, but like them a lot. Hitting the ball about the same height, have re-gained the slight draw I had 15 years ago and all through my youth, and am hitting them at least a half club longer than my DCI 'Blacks. The new irons are 1/2" extended and 2 degrees upright. My old irons were 1/2" extended and one degree upright.
Here are my questions: Just out of curiosity, what if any difference is there between an XP-90 and an XP-95? Why are there two labelings of the same shaft? Just made for different market?
And, more importantly, is there anything to be gained in continuing to think about the KBS C-Taper Lites if what I'm looking for is to get the most out of these irons by keeping them as light as possible?
I think you are going to sell the hell out of these T-MB irons for good players, once they try them and fall for the great looking heads.
