Wedge Gapping

  1. I am getting AP2 irons. The AP2 PW is 46* and I want to have consistent gapping throughout my wedges. I am going to order a 50.08 (bent to 51.09), 56.10, and 62.08. Does anyone see any problems with these gaps? I do rely on my short game to score low and like to have a variety of clubs to choose from around the green.

    Thanks

    Hey James.
I also play AP2s. I went with 52.12, 56.10 and 60.08. There is a bigger gap between my PW an 52 but I feel more comfortable taking distance off my PW. I felt the 50 was getting to close to it.

The loft gaps are manageable. More important is the grind and bounce and how you use the clubs. Which ones will be full or partial swings or what type of ground conditions do you normally play off of. I used to think keeping the 4 degrees was important, but getting fit under the conditions which i use them is as important as the distance gaps.

I play the new AP2 716s with a 46* PW as well. My old AP2 712 PW was 47*. So I switched from 52*/56*/60* Vokey wedges to the new SM6 50.08, 54.10S and 58.12K the day they were released. Big difference. Positive difference.

Thought I would miss my 60.07, but have much better results with the high bounce, full-soled 58K. Though the 54 is technically a SW, I use the 58 out of 90% of greenside bunkers with much better results than any other wedge I have EVER used for bunker play. I really have a higher degree of confidence with the K grind 58. I have made more sand saves in the short time I have had the new SM6s than I think I did all last year with my old 56 and 60. I seem to be able to control distance so much more with it from bunkers.

And my 54S is now my primary chipping tool and gets me the same full-swing distance as my old 52 did.

The 50* is the perfect club to follow my PW. In addition to also using it for chipping (usually for uphill longer chipitches), it is the perfect-fitting full-swing GW for my game.

4* of wedge gapping seems perfect. I considered a 62* as well, but frankly, don't really see a need when I examine things closely. I can flop with the 58 from all but the tightest/hardest of lies. And the rare times I end up in a tight lie flop situation, I usually have other options. Not worth carrying an extra wedge for those rare occasions.

If you are comfortable with a 62* because you played one with confidence in the past, and really want to continue playing a 62*, then sure, get one. But if you are just looking for gaps that work, I would definitely go 50/54/58. I thought I was going to bend my 50 to 51 and my 54 to 55 before I bought them. However, now that I have played them a lot, I see no reason to bend anything. The new SM6s are awesome wedges. Hopefully you will be able to try them out before buying them. You will likely rethink your plan. I know I did when I got fit for mine.

I just recently went from AP2s to AP1s and ordered new wedges also. Was at my fitters today getting one of the new SM6s adjusted to a 51.09 also. My wedges match my set thru the W. PW is 43*, W 47*, then SM6 51.09 and SM6 56.14. This was based on a recommendation of my Titleist fitter. The AP1s are very strong but also very accurate. All clubs have the XP105 S300 shafts, +1/2 inch, 2* flat, midsize grips with two extra wraps. Tour velvet grips. I do not tell my fitter what I want done, we talk about it because he is the expert and I trust him.

I went and got fitted on a launch monitor. Best thing I have ever done. I hit my wedge, and then I hit ever degree wedge he had. We looked at everything and he gapped them for me when i ordered them. turns out I hit my 54 as far as I was hitting my old 52. So he ordered a 50' and bent it to a 49. then we bent the 58 to a 59. So my gaps are 49, 54, 59 now.

Hi - I also got fitted on the monitor for a 50, 54 and 60. Slightly uneven gapping but the numbers on the monitor didn't lie and I have really noticed the difference, especially going from my old 52 to the 50. I use AP1 so the gap between the PW and the 52 was quite large
