I had a fitting with the Titleist rep at my club last fall when the new AP1s and 816s were released, and which I like the forgiveness of the 716 AP1s, I ordered a lot of clubs, yet I developed some bad shanking habits with the new irons that I never had before. I have done all kinds of lessons and analysis on my swing, and while its not perfect, I recently believe that it was because I was "custom" fit into the wrong shafts -- the NPS 950 Pro shafts stiff. I realize these are probably great shafts, but I recently went to a fitting for some woods, and the fitter saw my irons and had me try them with the stock XP 90 reg shaft and no shank, no problems.

In sum, from what I have been reading, being in a too heavy and/or stiff shaft can promote hitting too close to the hosel and question if I was fit properly, with the wrong shaft has contributing to me not being able to square up the clubface. Can Titleist help? Not placing blame, just losing confidence because this is a problem I NEVER had. Thanks.

I am doubtful the problem is with the shaft. The golfer swings the club which hits the ball. These problems are most always with the golfer's swing or setup. I would recommend seeing a PGA certified teaching pro. Here is a drill that cured me with the shanks. I had them real bad too. Setup 2 balls at address. Have one ball in your normal ball position and also have a ball about 2 to 3 inches from that ball but closer to you. Setup at address to hit the outer ball but when you swing on the downswing hit the inside ball (not the one you had address) without hitting the outer ball. You are not allowed to standup (come out of your spine angle) to hit the inner ball. At first it will feel very difficult, but after a short while you'll be hitting the inner ball pretty easy. Don't worry so much about direction but focus on solid contact. Now after successfuly hitting 10 "inner" balls, try setting up to just the 1 ball like you normally do and swing away. This drill helped me correct my swing path and I started make really solid contact with all my irons without shanking. Try this I think it will help.
