Issues with too heavy swingweight on +1/2 irons

I have played for a number of years with Titleist irons, both the CB's and most recently with the 714 AP2 irons. My normal specs are +1/2", 2 degrees upright with a stiff shaft and a standard size grip(Z Cord). My previous sets have had the Dynamic Gold S300 shafts and have been D3 swingweight. I decided to upgrade to the new 716 AP2 irons with the Dynamic Gold S300 AMT shafts with the same specs, but the irons came in at D7 which I have been told is standard when adding 1/2 inch. It has also been relayed to me that D5 is as light as they can be made at +1/2. Trying to get the clubs to D3, I tried counterweighting the irons, which resulted in too much overall weight and was a disaster.

I am looking for some information as to how I can reorder a set of 716 AP2 irons at +1/2 with a D3 swingweight. I don't know if the AMT shaft has a different weight distribution than the original DG S300 or if the heads in the new AP2's are heavier. Does anyone know?

If I could get the AP2's with the original Dynamic Gold S300 at +1/2 I would do that, or I am willing to consider other KBS, Project X, etc. shafts (in either a std weight or lighter weight option) if there is a way to get the longer length in a D3 swingweight from the factory. I would appreciate it if someone could shed some light on this for me as I am now back to my old 714 irons until I figure out another solution. Thanks.

    Bragg Creek,

The only advice I can give you is that you want to do your home work before switching shafts. When I was first fit into irons that were +1/2", I loved the extra weight, so I never looked at going back. However, you'll have quite the wake up call if you go from an S-300 to a KBS Tour or even more so with the C-Taper or C-Taper lite. All three are great options, but (in my opinion) you'll get a lot smoother feel with the KBS and that feel a lot better than trying to manipulate a club by 4 swing weights

Thanks Trevor. I totally agree. I have played these before. I had the C-Tapers and C-Taper lites in AP irons about 3 years ago. I liked the feel of those, but found the they seemed to run about a half a flex stiffer. I also played the KBS Tour shafts in a set of Mizunos quite some time ago and agree that all the KBS options have a smoother feel to them. In the KBS shafts, I would likely stay with the Tours or Tour V shaft. I would like to find some place to swing the Tour V shaft as I haven't had a chance to try it before. The prospect of a little bit lighter shaft does appeal to me. Over the years I have had the Project X 6.0 and liked the shot dispersion and feel, but I seemed to have issues with tendonitis in my elbows in the couple of sets that had the Project X shafts. It certainly could have been related to the turf interaction of the club heads as much as the shafts.
