Had my clubs fitted nearly 3 years ago now with standard loft and lie , had a fresh fit last week ( another manufacturer) and I am now 1.75 degree upright. Is it worth having mine altered or will it not make much difference. I play off 5. If I should have them done what's the best way to get them done? Thanks Craig

    Hey Craig,

Great question about the lie angles. As always I want to preface that this is very player dependent, but there are some things we can suggest and have you try to understand.

It is always a good idea to have your clubs checked before every season to make sure they are correct. The metal can bend over time, and is very common.

Was this an indoor fitting or an outdoor fitting?
    - If indoors, I would test that theory on the grass and see if the turf interaction gets better or worse. You could bend one club to test rather than the whole set.

    What does the ball do?
    - If the ball flies right often, the club be too flat. This is just ONE reason, but if you change the lie does it make the ball start more left with a more center strike?
    - If you go upright, does the ball start too far left?
In the fitting world, we just test and hit them both. If we see an improvement, we keep it, if we don’t we go back. Best thing to do is get a local professional or shop set up a stock iron of your preference and hit shots with both.

    Hope this helps!

When I started playing the game the standard 5 iron lie angle was 59* & I played them 1* upright. Today the standard lie seems to be 62*, so I play them 2* flat. I still play my 5 iron at 60* and have every iron bent in 1/2* increments from there, regardless of manufacture. This angle seems to give me the consistent contact & flight for my swing.
