Will it hurt the club's performance by adding +1.5 to length?

  1. I'm in the market for a new set of clubs, and a friend I play with is replacing his 716 AP1s with AP2s. I'd really like to pick up his set since I know they are in good shape, and the sale would be very easy. The issue is they are standard length and I need +1.5 (I'm 6'5'').

Could I safely have the clubs extended by this much or would I be making a big mistake? Thanks

  2. I am 6'-6" and only have my clubs 1/2" longer...FWIW; however 1.5" is a lot of length and I would reconsider...Getting professionally fit by an authorized Titleist Fitter would be worth the trip! IMHO

The answer is "it depends". I'm also 6'5". I came from another brand before upgrading to Titleist and I also had 1.5" added to the shafts on my prior set after being fit.

I did the same when I purchased the Titleists (AP1s) and the fitter kept asking me "are you sure, you want 1.5"?" His opinion was no more than 1". I insisted and turns out, no surprise, he was right. I had all kinds of problems making the adjustment, got the clubs cut down to 1" and ended up taking lessons because my swing had become so bad.

Lesson is, get fitted properly, and trust what they say. They know what they're talking about.

Getting fit is the key. If it turns out your fitter recommends that you need 1 1/2 inch longer length shafts, it will not hurt the performance to answer your question.
Getting the correct fit and having a good address posture is very important to the performance of your clubs more so than what the actual length is.

    Oh...by the way...you will love the AP1s.

Sticking with the rest, it's best to get fitted for such a change. I'm not certain you are going to find a reliable answer through all of us for this.
  8. Thanks for the input everyone.

I ended up going to a highly recommended fitter here in the Thousand Oaks, CA area and spent a little over 2 hours with him. It turns out I need +1.5 for 4 through 6 and +2 for 7 through wedges. I swung a variety of different brands, and the best were the AP1s. I will definitely need to custom order this set.

This is good news. You took the proper steps to address this issue. Now go out there and have some fun on the course. Hope all your strikes go straight.
