Let me start off my saying I am in my mid-forties and just started playing golf. So far I've shot around 120 each of my rounds this year, I know go easy on me.

With that said I've been reading and watching reviews regarding quality clubs. I've decided to get 916 AP1's and some Vokey wedges. I know the general consensus is yes get fitted for your clubs.

Given that fact I'm still working to find my swing. My question is at this point does it really make sense to pay for fitting? I know I can get fitted for free at GolfSmith, but do they really help you? My other option is to pay the folks at Jim McLean's and again would it be worth the money? I should add I just started taking lessons at a Jim McLean golf center.

    Thanks for the advice,

    Corey

GS fitting, Jim McClean golf center, and Ap1s are all an excellent way to start your journey. With these elements to start, your determination, practice time, and with persistence you will be well on your way to shooting low numbers in the not too distant future. Stick with it. The journey you are about to begin will be awesome.

Stick with Jim McLean's. Since you are currently taking lessons there, they should be able to give you some additional swing tips during the fitting.

At some point, you and your pro can talk about when you are being held back with your current set. Then it will be time for the next step. It gets a little bit like a chicken and egg which is your next step. You should be confident your teacher will have your best interest at heart and not a quick sale.

They will let you know if you have the right clubs or not. And if they are not right they can always be adjusted.

Yes I'd definitely get fitted. Met a young man this weekend who's swing speed was well in excess of 100mph and was badly hooking every drive. He asked me how I like my 915 driver and said I loved it and told him how I was fitted for this club and shaft. He told me he just goes into one of our local golf shops and buys whatever looks good without even hitting it first! I asked to see his driver and he has a "R" flex shaft!
Long story short - everyone regardless of skill needs to be using the right shafts and clubs for THEIR game.

I am a 22 and I was recently fitted at the Manchester Lane facility and it was well worth the investment!! Once we got the lie angle correct, I hit about 10 shots in a row straight and I have never hit 10 shots in a row straight in my life. I am not a fan of going to a Big Box store. Make the investment and watch your scores improve.

The best fitting takes place out on the range so you can see the changes to your ball flight different shafts make to your clubs. The other added advantage is you get a lesson with it. I would agree with Don O though wait until your instructor tells you to get new clubs. My father used to always say brand new clubs same old swing. Good luck and you can never go wrong with a Titleist.
  11. I was fitted at GS, I felt like I was fitted to an in stock set of Irons at first, I'm not sure. When I got them out on course I hit them bad unless I hit them as hard as I could which led to fatigue pretty quick. They kinda sold me on their performance guarantee and said I can exchange them in 90 days if I don't like them. I started working with a Pro he told me I was fitted wrong and to take them back, since then I have started to play much better. I think that if you are working with a pro taking lessons, they are better to see what clubs will best suit you. Cheers
  12. I was fitted when I first start, in hindsight to early, after playing for 6 years with an official handicap of 23, contantly playing to 16/18 I am now looking for a refit.
How ever it's what ever makes you feel comfortable and confident.
