Shaft question

  1. I currently use a 915 D2 8.5" driver with Diamana S+ 70 gram 45" shaft, and am thinking about a 917 with the same exact set up derived from a fitting. But before I do I wanted to experiment with a shorter 44" shaft to see how it affects my dispersion and a too often tendency to push the ball to the right. (I use the A3 setting to help with this).

Two Questions: (Aside from getting a whole new fitting) I have a 13* fairway wood that has the same shaft only it is a 44" length. Would this shaft be essentially the same as if I cut the 45" driver shaft down to 44' properly?

Additionally, if I just cut 1" off the butt end for the purpose of my experiment would this affect the shaft flex/bend point too much to invalidate my results?

    Thank you,

I'm pretty sure your driver & FW adapters are not interchangeable and it seems a little rash to cut your driver shaft down an inch just to see how it affects dispersion. If you cut it down and it has no impact on dispersion, but you loose some distance, then what do you do? I would suggest going back to where you had your fitting and see if they have your desired shaft in a 44" length so you can try it. It's a better option than cutting down your shaft, IMHO.
  3. The sure fit adapter is interchangeable and why I posted the question.

My interest in finding out how it affects my dispersion and tendency to push the ball may help inform my decision on a possible new club and will give me much more feedback being able to play with it over several rounds than a few hits during a fitting. Many folks report using a shorter driver has helped them with control (Pros on tour average shorter drivers for this reason and would probably be your best control group when it comes to control and distance).

Obviously if the difference in shortening a 45" shaft properly and a manufactured 44" from a 2 wood were the same that would be what I would do. But if it they would be different is some unapparent aspect then it would not be a valid comparison.

Beside you never know what you can learn ....

    Hi TB,
The new 917 CG weighting system affects curvature so when you work with your fitter, they should be able to assist you with dispersion using the new CG and advise you on length as well.
The fairway and driver shafts start out the same, but they are tipped differently and then cut to length.
    1) The fairway at a 44" length was tipped 1/2" and if you cut the driver shaft to 44", it would have not been tipped so should play slightly softer.
    2) Cutting 1" from the butt should not affect it too much, but as Barry mentioned, if there is no improvement in speed and dispersion, you will either have to start over or put an extension in it to get it back to std length.
  5. Thanks Cathy,
I think your message is saying a 44" 2 wood shaft would be the same as the 45" driver shaft with the exception of 1/2" off the tip if it were cut down 1" on the butt end only.

So just one more clarifying question in you can indulge me. Would a 44" driver shaft made to order also be tipped 1/2"?

This would tell me that I could or should not use the 44" 2 wood shaft as a 44" driver shaft if I wanted a fair comparison. Since I do not want to mess with taking off the sure fit adapter and placing it back on as well I would opt not to shorten the driver shaft to see what the result is.
    Thanks,

If you ordered a a driver at 44" (1" short of standard), it would not be tipped unless you made a special request to have it tipped.

A fairway ordered at 44" (1" longer than standard 3 wood), standard tipping would be 1/2".
