Bad fitting?

  1. I was fitted for my titleist irons at a titleist Thursday around 4 months ago. I got titleist AP2 9-4 and SM6 wedges 46, 52, 56, 60 degrees. 2 degrees upright with X-stiff shafts. I was so excited to get my clubs in but since I've had them I've had the shanks. I was hitting the ball just fine with my old clubs and now I can't seem to hit anything good. Could it have just been a bad fitting?

    Hi DSzymanski,

That's an interesting question/experience. I don't think that I've had a bad fitting experience. What were your previous clubs? How many times have you played with your new clubs?

There could be an adjustment period where you are getting used to the new clubs and just over the fact that they are brand new and lots of people hate "breaking in" new things.

Also, how do these irons compare to your old set, in regards to specs (shaft flex, lie, etc.)? If you are really not happy after a few more times, I would suggest to go back to where you purchased them and tell them. Most places are really good about you being able to return them for most of the purchase price and get something new because they want to make sure that your equipment is playing to your liking and making sure you are enjoying the game.

Let us know how it turns out and what you end up doing.

Most likely an adjustment period. I had gotten 716 AP1s, and was so excited - until I shanked 4 balls on 5 shots into marshes off the fairway. The shaft was much different in weight and I was off tempo until I spent some time on the range. Much better now.

Hi DSMZ ... For your peace of mind, I would suggest that you take your clubs to a Certified Titleist Fitter (a different one perhaps or the same one) and have them re-fit you.

If all is good then you have the peace of mind and quiet confidence to know that the equipment is fine. This will allow you to focus on your swing and swing mechanics -- just getting used to the golf clubs, etc.

    Hi DSzymanski
I agree with Samuel C about going back to where you bought them and let them have a look at your swing and lie tape marks etc. and/or go for a lesson.
I got a complete new set a couple of months ago and it only took me nine holes to get used to them and play the best I ever have. However the last couple of weeks I'm struggling as I'm swinging too fast and upsetting my tempo.
Sometimes our enthusiasm that comes with new clubs results in dong something different with our swing.

  6. As pgam student, what were you playing before the switch. Ive you changed from stiff to x and change weight profiles along with flight profile or grip size these all be factors that could be throwing you off. Id suggest going back to were you were fitted with the new clubs and your old ones. Usually a slight break in period is needed but not much if all the old clubs specs are the same as new club specs.

Think you are just in the adjustment period! It always takes a few days to get used to new clubs!
I never had a bad fitting experience up to now

Agree with the adjustment period comments.

When I switched from AP1 710s to 712s (similar shafts, setup etc) I was having terrible trouble after the switch, I really thought I'd made a bad mistake.

I ended up going out on my own and hitting irons everywhere, every shot - I did this two or three times until I got used to them.
I've always put it down to that I was trying to prove I'd made the right choice, that my new bats were going further / straighter / better flight etc etc. Once I'd relaxed a bit they turned out to be an improvement on my old clubs.

    Good luck !
