I need to tell this story and how important it is to get fitted.... Last week I was talking to a guy at my gym. Long story short, he's a very nice guy and was able to play one round with him during the summer. During that one round (only played 9 holes) I noticed he bought the 716 AP2s. Anyways to last week, I asked how the rest of his golf summer was and he reminded me he bought the 716 AP2. So i asked him how did you play with them? He said not very good and he was having a hard time hitting them, could never make a solid hit.

So I asked him, "Did you get fitted?"

His response: " No. Bought them off the rack at a golf store. I figured I would get the same shaft or close to it that I was using on my old CLVD irons for the new 716 AP2s.. And I can't seem to hit it that well." HUH...

My response; "1, you should've gotten fitted and told him about my experience at Manchester Lane and how much fun i was having with my new 716 AP1s, 816 Hybrids and 2, I'm pretty sure those old CLVD heads are A LOT different (feel, weight, etc.) than the 716 AP2's head."

Anytime someone asks me for advice about club fitting, I tell them go see a professional fitter and get fitted. Period. I'm not a pro and know VERY little about what's right for someone. See a professional and get fitted the right way. Trust me, spending the extra money (if required) and getting fitted will make a HUGE difference in your game..

  2. Chris, Your right. I've spent numerous hours on fittings and they pay off. Numbers and trackman don't lie. Granted not every club in my bag is Titleist, but I play what's been fitted for me and my game. Now I can't blame my clubs and when my game goes wary sometimes, I see my pro and less than 5 minutes problem solved. That's why their Pros. The cost of fittings now is very reasonable for the outcome. People always think they need to have the latest and greatest or what their buddies play. Just get fitted!!!

+1 Chris H. Some of us need to learn the hard way.

Hi Christopher, after reading about your experience, I could not agree more. It just seems silly that someone would take the time to look for new clubs and then spend their money on them, without taking the time to make sure that they are fit for them.

After all, one does not walk into a Men's store and order a suit off the rack and expect it to fit properly and perform the way he likes it without being properly fit -- whether it is altering jacket length/arm sleeve length, hems in the pants, etc.

Recent golf marketing research tells us that customers are more and more demanding or wanting the experience of being fit for clubs and the personal attention and customization that goes into it.

Good point, Chris. Always get a proper fit. And Titleist made it easy with their Titleist Thursdays this year and they were free.

Absolutely Chris......always get fitted, swings change, we get another day older, an injury that might change something we can't see or feel and to spend money on golf clubs without being fitted can be suicide to your game. I always get fitted when buying clubs

Titleist made a believer out of me. I always bought driver shafts based on club head speed alone. They put me in a longer , heavier shaft, and although the ball flight looked the same, I had almost 17 yards additional carry.......

Not only is getting fitted for all 14 clubs important, getting physically fit and fitted is just as important. Along with a full club fitting at TPI in Oceanside, I also did a full physical evaluation at TPI. It was an amazing Titleist day! Treat yourself to the full Titleist treatment.

I couldn't agree more. Getting fitted not only insures the best chance for success , but if you are lucky enough to go to Manchester Lane, it's an unforgettable experience. I can't wait to go back this spring for a wedge fitting.

Steve, the wedge fitting was probably my favorite part.. Thanks to Josh G. for recommending it and telling me it's a must.. I could spend HOURS in the short game area.. So much fun hitting those Vokey's...

More agreement with you Chris. I was fit for the 917 Driver by the Professional staff at Pinehurst right after the Team Titleist event. I ended up with a configuration in the 917 that I NEVER would have even considered if I had try to "fit myself" and the numbers have shown the improvement over both my previous drivers, a 913 D2 and cally XR16.

And to reiterate what Chuck said about the Titleist Thursday's, awesome opportunity that doesn't cost you anything.

Even though I've known I do best when fitted, I've on occasion cheated some on that. With resounding failures. I went through the bag this year to get back to a good baseline. Including woods at Oceanside. I added 20 yards using an expert instead of me for the driver fitting. I never would have been close to that with 15 minutes in a hitting bay with the one LH head there and 2 shafts. That kind of investment should be done right the first time.
