  1. I have a set of AP1 716 irons and I'm not sure I have the right shaft. My irons have the KuroKage tini 65 gram reg shaft. My swing speed with the driver is about 85. I'm not getting the height or the distance I got with my AP1 710 irons and the lofts on my new irons are stronger. What shaft should I be using in my irons?

hard to say since everyone is different. even just swing speed, it's different. if you have a fitter locally, i'd start there first to make sure you should be hitting the right shaft.

were you fitted with the KK?

if yes, go back to your fitter and get some answers, preferably with a trackman or the like.

if not, go to a certified fitter with a trackman to get fit properly.

    cheers!

When you were fitted, the fitter should have compared your old clubs versus the new 716 irons and you would have seen a much improved iron. I would take them back to the fitter and explain you problem.

it's hard to tell what shaft you need, you should go club fitting to find out

Did you get fit or buy off the rack? The KK 65 is close to the highest launch shaft. If fit you should talk to the fitter. I went from 714 with the 85 g (mid launch) to the 716 with the 65 g. Added 1.5 club length and even the 6 iron launches like a wedge. Driver speed in the same range as you.

    Richard,
The fitting chart for the Kuro Kage iron shafts on the Mitsubishi website recommends the 65 gram reg flex shaft that you have if you have a driver club head speed of 81 to 90 MPH. According to the Titleist custom options guide this shaft is one of the highest launching iron shafts Titleist offers. If 85 MPH is your correct driver swing speed these shafts should work well for you.

    Richard,
You didn't say what shafts you had in you previous irons. If they were steel then you lost a lot of shaft weight going to graphite. I'm planning on getting new 716 AP1s with the 65 gram KK graphite shaft. They will replace 714s with XP95 steel. That is a 32 gram loss per club in shaft weight. If I had dynamic gold it would have been a 65 gram loss of weight. I have been playing heavy steel shafts in my irons for 59 years. I know the difference in feel from heavy steel to light graphite is going to take time to get used to. And while that time passes ball striking results will probably suffer. I have a friend who went through this change. He hit the ball bad for more than a month. Almost gave up on graphite iron shafts. He finally got used to the different feel and now says he will never play steel again.
