Was thinking about cutting down my driver about an inch and a half just to see how it went. Always felt like having a shorter driver would increase my accuracy and now I've seen that trend with Jimmy Walker and Ricky Fowler this week. My question, can I take my current driver and have them cut it? Or would that not work because of how the driver was originally constructed? Just wanted to test it out before ordering a custom driver. Sorry for the length of the question. Any advice or feedback would be appreciated.

Ryan, from what I understand, you can have it done at your local golf shop. There is a lot of action from many people doing this and I think it's a great thing!
  3. Ryan, great question.

Here are some things you need to consider. First, if you cut down the shaft, which is not a problem, the swingweight on your club will go down. Thus, you will need a new sole weight. Second, you may lose some distance to compensate for your straighter drives so do not become upset. Lastly, I would go in small increments of shortening your driver maybe a 1/2" at a time. This way you can determine what length is best for your game.

I have shortened my driver a total of 1/2" and have been so much happier as a result! Go For It!!

There was a piece on the Golf Channels Morning Drive the other day about this. They suggested choking down 1st to see if you like it first and foremost. They say it will sacrifice some distance but make the club slightly more accurate. It changes the flex point a little and creates a stiffer shaft...but not too noticeable for a weekend warrior.
  5. I play a 44.5 inch shaft, absolutely love it. I have done all the work myself for the last 5-6 years and I will give you some insight before you do it, the weight will change and so will the kick point go to someone who can cut the shaft down and be able to make sure the weight stays the same and so does the kick point! That way the driver will feel the exact same just shorter! It's easy to do you just have to cut from both ends on the shaft to balance out.

    Hope that helps!

Thanks for all the responses. Think I'll cut mine to 43.5. Anyone have any idea how much that usually costs?

I don't think you would want to go below -1", 44" driver length, even with the black weight I think you can only get back to a D2 swing weight with lighter grip. If the head gets too light you may lose the feel of it in your swing.

Keep in mind that Rickie, Jimmy & Sergio etc. have Professional clubmakers at there disposal, I'm sure there is some hot melt going on with some of their driver heads and special builds specs that help these clubs perform extremely well for them.

if you cut the shaft down, do you need a lighter weight grip? also, do you need to add weight to the head?

It really depends on your feel preference, it will make the club feel lighter. For every 1/2" cut you lose 3 swing weight points (D4 to D1). Titleist offers the 16g- 917 weight that should add 2 points back to sw (D3), also every -5 grams of grip weight (standard 50g) equals 1 sw.
  11. All great advice to consider before you make the move. I did this once without this advice and I ended up with a very light driver that never made it in the bag. Bottom line is find an experienced club fitter to do this so you aren't disappointed.
