I have been playing golf for almost 25 years and I've never had a proper club fitting. I'm left handed which has always added a layer of complexity. I bought a set of Titleist DCI off the rack when I was a Junior in High School and played with those clubs for almost 20 years!
But last month I had one of the coolest experiences in the game so far. I met up with Charlie, my local San Francisco Bay Area Titleist club fitter / product specialist and for two hours he fit me into irons, wedges, driver and hybrid vs. long iron.
When I showed up on the range (grass outdoor range) he had a trackman set up, a bucket of proV golf balls, and an arsenal of shafts and club heads laid out like a chef ready to compete in some cooking show. He had me warm up with my own clubs (Titleist AP1 off the rack) and then started asking me questions about preferred ball flight, where my misses ended up typically and what's the ideal workability of my golf shot (falling right, falling left). Then he handed me a T-MB 7 iron (the club I really wanted to be fit into) and started tweaking it for my swing and most importantly, my misses. After a slew of different shafts and discussion about choking down on the club vs. going with .5" short (I prefer to choke down) he fit me 2degrees flat with Project X LZ shafts. The club feels like butter and the flight is incredible. My misses are manageable and my confidence with these clubs are through the roof.
He also fit me into a D3 driver to get my spin down (my ball literally checks back on my driver) with the Fujikura Speeder Pro X .5" short.
He fit me all the way from Driver to 60degree wedge without any gaps. He also left me with a putter tip: cut an inch off my Golo 5 putter and add weights to get it at 33" so my eyes are above the ball. Did it and in one round cut 4 strokes off my putting.
It's taken me about 6 rounds to get fully comfortable in my new clubs but I've been playing the best golf I've played in years. Shooting between 77-79 at my local course (Harding Park) for the last 3 rounds.
You hear it all the time from everyone: "get fit for your clubs." Now, I'm an impatient person but this process was well worth the outcome. Thanks Charlie!
