  1. I am getting back into the game; played last year but before that had been away for ten years. Currently, I’m playing to a 21.7 HCP. 6 irons through wedges I hit pretty well and think my weaker areas are Driver/long irons. Putting could be better but have been getting my share of up and downs and think that it coming along. Love my old trusty DCIs, when hit well they feel great and on bad shots, you get feedback that lets you know. However, I know I would benefit from something more forgiving. Am I too bad of a player to still be gaming Titleist Irons? Would the AP1 suite me? I hit them at a golf store and liked them but was not sure about the standard fit and shafts. I do plan to be more extensively fit at a demo day soon. Wondering if the AP1 in combination with a soft stepped XP 95 shaft or similar would do the trick. I did a miz fitting and this shaft combo was great for me, but I really want to keep Titleist in my bag if I can. Any thoughts on getting the AP1s and growing into them vs something SGI? Will I really need something with more forgiving long irons? I don’t like Hybrids too much FYI so end up hitting my six iron, then seven iron into greens on PAR 5s

  2. I had been hitting the same irons for 20 years, and finally came back to golf last year and decided to buy some new clubs. I had always wanted Titleist irons so I bought the AP1's and I absolutely love them. They are incredibly forgiving and have great distance too. I'm a 15 handicap and would definitely recommend these clubs for you.
  3. I have a high handicap similar to yours. I play the 716 AP1 4-W. the are massively forgiving. I don't like the look of too much offset, particularly 6-W. (I learned to play golf with some old Wilson FG-17s) and tried a set with more offset but just couldn't get used to it. The AP1 is a great balance. Seeing that you are used to clubs that don't have massive offset, I think you may find some of the sgi irons with more offset a little off putting, too. My $.02. I would say get the clubs that you like the look of and which give you max confidence.

Run, don't walk, to a quality club fitter and get professional help in putting together a set of clubs. AP1's are very forgiving and hybrids are much easier to hit than long irons. A quality club fitter can help you assemble a set including both. Maybe 6-wedge with 2 or 3 hybrids and appropriate shaft for your game. Its money well spent. If you don't like hybrids, consider high lofted fairway woods. I switch a 7 wood and 3 iron hybrid in and out of my bag all the time depending on the course I'm playing.

If you were able to hit DCIs 10 years ago, you should have no problem with AP1s. They are a lot more forgiving, yet still quite versatile for some shaping of shots, albeit it not as much as a players iron might be. If you get properly fit, I see no reason you would need to look elsewhere for a set of irons. The AP1s are game-improvement irons. Just because they are Titleist does not mean they are tougher to hit than other companies' game improvement irons. And no other company supports their loyal players and customers better than Titleist does. If you loved your DCIs, I bet you will love your AP1s even more.

Thanks Doug, I'm still playing the 981's now, also just getting back into golf, my fitter was thinking AP1's will be best for me, we did wedges and now I'm going to do irons two weeks. I actually did hit the 8-iron pretty well for both the ap1's and ap2's while warming up for the wedge fitting. So I guess we'll see soon enough.

My original fitting after buying 2nd hand off of e-Bay was with 712 AP1 vs G15. Forgiveness/performance was equal, and the AP1 didn't have the massive bulk that screamed (super) game improvement. I'm in the same range HCP and hitting irons isn't a problem. Swing speed hurts, and no iron would help that. Hence, my fitter won't look at AP2 as it would likely be shorter. The H1 hybrids really help in place of 3-4-5 irons.

I was in a similar spot a couple years back. Tried cally, tm, png but decided to go with Titleist 714 AP1's now gaming the 716 AP1's started with a hdcp of 19 now three years later playing at a 9 -10 simply love them. I now have a full bag of both titleist clubs balls and all sorts of towels, umbrellas, bag tags etc. Think you will be satisfied

I had DCI blacks years ago, upgraded to AP1 in 2008 and again this year. The AP1s are easier to hit yet give you the same feedback that you and I value. They are much more forgiving on off center strikes and glide through the turf much better.

It sounds like it won't take you to long to get your game back. They will help you while you do so and provide that extra level of performance to continue your improvement. Take your time to hit other the stuff and do the comparisons. But you won't go wrong with the APs. Great clubs.

    Hi Gregory,
Make sure you go to a Certified Tileist Fitting Center with Titleist staff. I decided to upgrade from my DCI's and mistakenly went to a large golf retailer. I was fitted incorrectly and talked out of purchasing Titleist clubs. After a dismal season, in the fall, I went to a Certified Titleist Fitting Center with Titleist staff. I was fitted for the 714's and it has made a HUGE difference my game. Make sure you take the time to try the shafts, grips and the lies. I'm positive you will like the new 716's. Get fitted for balls as well. As a point of note, if you do not have a Scotty Cameron putter, consider getiing fitted. If you putt 2-3 times a hole, it becomes the most used club in your bag. Cheers
  11. thanks, all great advice, will definitely be going to either a certified fitter or being fit at my club by Titleist when they do a demo day here.
  12. Will be attending a conference in the north shore area of boston for a few days in June, found two certified fitters in the town I'll be in so looks like new AP1s and Vokeys come June, so excited!
  13. addendum :

    Scotty too!
