So. I am in the market for a new set of irons. I haven't tested anything as yet but thinking Titleist 718's. I currently play and old (and well loved) set of Hogan Apex Edge Pro Forged Irons, probably 12 years old now. The lofts of my irons exactly match those of the 718 CB's
One question would be: In comparison to my Hogan's how forgiving would a modern forged iron be. Specifically the Ap2?
Second question: I play off of 13, but have been a single figure play in my youth (I'm 40). I'm a solid iron player. I'm interested to know if I would be considered good enough to play with the Ap2?
I'm thinking Ap2 rather than Ap1 or Ap3 as I am not chasing distance (7 iron carry is 160 * 165) but want consistency of strike and distance.
Question 3. The videos I have watched all suggest blending different irons to make the best set. However looking at the lofts on each of the sets there are some real differences. Do Titleist adjust the lofts to ensure appropriate gapping on a blended set?
Anyhow, based on where I think my game is and where I want to take it I'm thinking of a set along the lines of:
TMB 2-4
AP2 5-8
CB 9-P
SM6 52,56,60
I am sure that this will change once the real figures from my fitting knock my ego into shape.
Interested to know what people think.
