  1. Hello,

I got my AP1's from Golf Galaxy and the guy had fitted me for +.5 extension and 1 degree upright. However, the guy who specializes in the shop said that I had to sign a form saying if my clubs snapped while bending them they wouldn't be liable. Since the AP1s are not forged, they have a high probability of breaking while bending? He then told me that if I am extending them .5, this will automatically bring the club 1 degree upright? Is this accurate? Or is he jerking my chain? Will Titleist do this for me?

  2. If he ordered them from the factory they would have been built to spec!

Hi Micah, If you were fit and purchased them at Golf Galaxy, normally, they would have ordered it at 1/2" long and 1° upright. Then, as Roger pointed out, they would have been built that way by us. If that is the case, you may want to talk with Golf Galaxy and have them order your irons the way they fit you.

If you were fit at 1/2" long and 1° upright, that is slightly different than just building them 1/2" long. The effective lie angle at 1/2" long is 1° more upright effectively, but the actual measured lie remains the same at standard lie angle.

If you were fit at 1° upright as well as 1/2" long, you will want the irons to be bent 1° upright so they are also measured 1° upright. Hope that makes sense.

You should confirm the lie to fit you at standard length- if your fit was one degree upright then with the 1/2" extension your playing/effective lie will be one degree upright as confirmed by Cathi. If your fit is two degrees upright (at standard length) then they will need to be bent the additional degree in order to fit. Titleist will bend up to 4 degrees upright so the chance of breakage should be low. It should be noted that if the additional length is only to account for the one degree upright fitting requirement the extra length could introduce some difficulty in making center contact- if this is the case I would recommend going back to standard length and making the required lie adjustment- best done by Titleist if in doubt.

Further to my previous comments the 1/2 inch extension adds 3 Swingweight points- I can't comment as to whether this is of benefit to you or not- if adjustment is required you would have to take off 2 grams to the head weight to decrease swing weight one point or add 4 grams of grip weight for a one point swingweight decrease. Hopefully all your required specs were accounted for in your final fitting.
