I don't currently have any plans for a club fitting, but I am curious to hear people's personal view on getting fit for clubs early in the season? Do you avoid it? Are you one to wait until you are in mid-season form?

I always lean towards later in the year because I want my swing to be in good shape. Getting fit with an inconsistent swing just seems counterproductive to me.

My last fitting was done in March on a sales trip to Texas. Coming from Wisconsin, all I've got through the winter is a 2 station hitting bay, hitting into a net. In March I'm rusty, but at least I'm able to swing a club. I felt like I got a good fitting. Hit some real clunkers, but also put together enough good swings to make the fitting. I concentrated on putting god swings on the ball and being rusty I think the thing that stands out is a few MPH lower swing speed. I still play the set I ordered based on this fitting. I would advise that if you have the opportunity to get fitted early season to go for it. Get in some range time beforehand if you can. Your swing is your swing, regardless of a layoff, or not. You may not be as consistent as you would later in the season, but a good fitter will still be able to get enough quality data to make recommendations.

Considering I just did an early season, I'm of the mind that there is never a bad time to get fit for new clubs.

I'll replace wedges soon. But like to wait until the grass is growing and the swing is grooved.

  6. It might depend on how consistent your swing is. I've been practicing my swing for 3 months, so I think I'd like to flatten my lie a degree or 2, and stand furthur away from the ball for a faster clubhead speed and distance.
    AP1, standard lie, XP90 shaft.
  7. You should hAVE FITTING. THEN ONCE COMPLETED, HIT THE standard club what you are fitted for.

I am 6'6".....the fitting was the best thing I ever did. trying to hit a standard club designed for the 5'8" golfer was insane. best thing i ever did.night vs day with results.

listen to the fitter--------------lots to learn about lie, length of shaft, grips, ball speed, loft.etc.you can improve your game with gear that fits you & your swing, you will not be disappointed.

    good luck

I was fitted last fall for the new AP3's. My swing was pretty consistent since the golf season was a bit longer than normal here in central Ohio. A plus was the fact that I was able to get the fitting outside on the range. Not only was I able to get fitted, but the clubs came early in the release date. I was able to get a full 3 weeks of comfortable play before the cold weather arrived. I felt that it was a great advantage to get the feel and true characteristics of the my new clubs.
I, too, believe that there is never a bad time to get fitted for a new set of Titleist clubs...... Just got my new Scotty, my new Titleist bag, couple of dozen of Titleist Tour Soft balls. Enough said.

If you put in the work during the off-season, a fitting in the spring probably won't be much different than if you did it later on in the season.

However, I don't think most golfers do enough to keep their swings (and their bodies) in shape for a spring fitting. A mid-season fitting is probably going to be best.

I may try the Vokey SM7s out this year but I'll wait until mid season before I do it.. Like Tiger, it's best to wait for the perfect weather and the swing is primed.. Much rather get fitted outside versus inside against a net..

Just got my 718 AP1 after last weeks fitting, Yeah swing wasn't like in August or September, but a I guess I had mindset of New Season, New clubs.

Was playing 714 AP1's, which I plan on taking to FL home for permanent residence and Southern use ;)

  13. I agree with Rick; essentially, your swing is your swing. It may be "grooved" a bit more later in the season but the plane your swing dwells in is probably set early in the season or late. One advantage to getting a fitting done early is your clubs are in your possession when the season gets into full swing. That lends itself to the progression of have the clubs, get some lessons, work on the swing and press on with the season. Of course, living in Houston, it's pretty much "in season" all year long!

I do it based on when i am ready to upgrade the set, not a specific time of the year. Even if i am off, not swinging my best, the TrackMan data should still point me in the right direction. I also can communicate that with the Fitter who might help me lean one way or the other based on how i feel i am hitting them during the session versus my normal swing. I actually did two fittings a month apart to get dialed in to my 718 T-MB's.

i think depends where you are with your game....i would tend to agree that if you have been fortunate to swing club during the winter....and swing is somewhat in a grove.....go for it....that way you can get your new clubs before real season starts and practice......rather than wait spring...get fitted....wait for clubs and practice to get use to them....deep down...i hate waiting for things...!!!!

I agree with you, MJ. I also HATE waiting!!

Interesting to read all the replies.

Like many of you, my preference to have the swing in a decent place before I go for any fitting. Time of the season generally does not matter to me. I prefer to have decent weather, be outside and on grass. I want to mimic neutral playing conditions as much as possible...and maybe more importantly limit exposure to conditions that may impact ball flight and/or swing freedom (cold, wind, rain, soggy conditions, etc). Titleist Thursday's have been a phenomenal addition to what Titleist offers and I will continue to take advantage. Once the Titleist Thursday schedule for Massachusetts comes out I will be looking to check out the SM7s and possibly do an iron fitting.
