  1. So I have been struggling this year in the short game department a lot of topping the ball in the pitching department so all my clubs are custom fit besides my wedges and my irons are 2 up +1 in length I'm a tall guy so my question is should I have my wedges fit to those standards to help with my short game?

  2. I think people really overlook the importance of having clubs made for you and you should definitely look at getting a Vokey fitting. But as for now, just really get some range time in focusing on hitting right on the ball, or flopping the ball, make sure you practice with a purpose. Really work on the different shits you’ll be hitting in a round.

    Best of luck !!!
  3. I recently got my full bag custom fitted and the section I was most impressed with was my wedge fitting. Such a difference between bounces and grinds and really dialled in my flight.

    1. If your wedges have not been fitted to you, go get them fitted to you by a professional.
    2. If they have been, you might start playing with ball position & maintaining a smooth un-jointed swing with your wedges. meaning less wrist flicking during back swing and follow thru. Lower body should stay quiet as possible as well. almost sounds like you're swinging up making you top the ball which is why I mention ball position. Good luck getting it worked out

Watch a video of Steve Stricker and Zach Johnson, absolutely 2 of the best. Very dead hands, and certainly look at ball position, as Darryl said. You're gonna have to find your preference as far as body movement through the ball. Some would say quiet body through impact, that isn't the case for me. I'm turning......

Absolutely. My lob wedge plays 1/2* upright from my gap wedge. I learned this lesson about 10 years ago because I would "spank" my LW because it was too flat (they would shoot off to the right). I play 1.5 upright on my irons. 2* upright on the 60 and the 64.

Also in a pitch shot, most of your weight is on your front foot at address. Should be almost no weight shift on the backswing and most of it on the downswing. I see too many flicking their wrists to try to look "fancy." There is no change to the basic golf swing except leaning the shaft a little more at address and maybe taking it a little more inside (since you are using an open stance; physics dictates that your upper body wants to follow your feet). Also, the clubface should point up during your follow through on a pitch instead of turning the hands over like on a full swing.

Lefty (and DP) have some good pitching and chipping tips, including choking the handle and length of backswing for distance control.

    Bragg Creek,

I was a verified yipper. Couldn’t play a pitch or a chip to save my life. In my search for answers, I found a fair amount of data to support that there’s a minimum club length for everyone. I’m 6’5” and play all my clubs lengthened. In the past however, I didn’t change my wedges. The day I made my wedges (47°, 52°, 56° & 60°) the same length as my 9 iron was the last day I had the yips. It’s a game changer!
