  1. Over the years, I have always enjoyed visiting the Titleist Performance Institiute in Oceanside, However, this time was very different so I hought I would share my experience.

First, I was already very happy with my 917 driver and fairway metal however some Titleist employees I know had remarked how the new TS woods were a large improvement. Ok, I said let’s take the challenge and see if it is possible to outperform my already great performing 917 driver and fairway metals. I began with the TS2 driver with the same loft as my current 917 (using my existing shaft). After the first drive I was blown away by how great it sounded and how the feel was so soft yet it seemed as though the ball exploded off the club face. Wow!

The fairway metals were no different and I could actually hit them with more control and a higher apex for a better looking ball flight while going the same distance or even a few yards longer. Wow! (Again)

The fitting part was where I really gained an interesting perspective. My fitter, Glenn, explained how the process at TPI was to accomplish three things: for the golfer to have fun, learn something new during the process, and take away a new perspective or swingthiught to Improve my game. That has never happened to me at a big box store fitting, or at least not all three. I did learn that an 18 degree TS2 fairway metal shortened to 42 inches for my game goes the same distance (in the A2 setting on the surefif adaptor so essentially it is 17 degrees) as my 16.5 917 Fairway metal off the turf and farther off the tee with significantly less dispersion and better ball flight that lands softer. Who would have knew? Obviously, Glenn has done this a long time (not to mention with tour professionals) enough to help improve my game.

At the end, I found out the TS2 driver has a much more forgiving makeup and I could actually get higher clubhead speeds along with longer drives! Ok, I am a believer now that the TS is an improvement over my already great 917. The fairway metal I was fitted for is an 18 TS2 with the A2 setting so it is essentially 17 degrees and has a very tight accuracy both offf the tee and turf.

Overall, if you have not been fit at one of Titleists two coastal National fitting centers it is definitely worth the trip! I hope you have the chance to get fit in early September at a Titleist Thursday for the TS woods.... you are really going to like them!

I was able to challenge the TS versus my beloved 917's. The 917s were so much better for me than the 915's I didn't think the "10 yards more" could be anything more than hype. I lost, Titleist won. The sound and feel was improved, and across all 3 clubs, I picked up club head speed,. The TS 4-wood matched the 917 Driver for distance. Even as a slower swinger (85 mph driver speed) I got the same general improvement as the faster guys like Hulk Chris. It still comes down to having a great outdoor test track, good flight monitors, and really well-trained fitters. TPI is as good as it gets. I know with the new shafts in the base matrix, I wouldn't have seen the same improvement at an indoor retail store with fitters that work with every brand in the store. Joey definitely worked to make sure I maximized the benefit of the technology. Even over-running the time allotted to finish the details.

  5. Thanks for the review Chris. I’m doing a driver/fairway fitting at tpi end of September and I can’t wait. Any tips or suggestions? I’m hoping to get the chance to spend some time playing around on that outdoor facility...it looks so good.

Very cool!! I can NOT wait to try these drivers out... What shafts did you try/end up with? And how is the TS2 spin rate compared to your 917 D3? TIA.

  8. I am in the need for a new driver and wood. Can't wait for a chance to be fitted in the Detroit area. Would like to match these to my month old AP3's and Volkey wedges. TT when are they going to be released in my area?

Clubs local to me are posting fittings starting around 9/5, although the actual release date will be late September - early October.
  10. Happy Birthday to me. Going to do a Tee-to-Green Fitting & Golf Fitness Evaluation at Oceanside. Do anybody have recommendations of a hotel to stay at? Looking at October, how is the weather during that time? Thanks

There was another TT chain that included other course options and some of the local resorts. Personally, I check the major chains and check on the options from La Jolla and Escondido to Oceanside. For my last trip, it worked out that the Courtyard near the Carlsbad Airport was both my best deal and the closest to Oceanside TPI. Being from Wisconsin, I just hum "it never rains in Southern California". There may be some fog earlier in the AM. The weather when I was there was "hot" in the 80's, normally in the high 70's.
  12. Update....I am booked November 1-2! Andy Dobson was great to work with!

Great review Chris thanks for sharing. I am curious if you tried the TS3 and how your numbers compared to the TS2? Or was it just personal preference with what you have been accustomed too? Either way, great trip and again thanks for sharing your experience. Cheers

When will the TS line hit the stores for fittings? e.g. Golf Galaxy etc.

Really excited to hear of your experience with the TS line. I went to Manchester Lane in July and loved the fitting experience. At that time they did not have the TS line to try. I just booked an appointment at a Titileist Thursday fitting at TPC Cromwell in September for driver and fairway metal fitting.

Can't wait to test these out against my 917 D3 and F3. For some reason I really like the look of the TS2 driver and fairway.
