I'm 74 years of age and, naturally, have a slow swing speed but I'm still a 10 handicapper. I'm thinking about switching to the T-400 irons but am confused about something. They have a considerably stronger loft but claim to launch the ball higher and fly it further. I'm having a hard time understanding a stronger loft getting more height and longer flight. Can anyone explain?

Unlike a cast or forged head with a cavity back, the T400 heads are hollow to allow more spring to the face and to allow more tungsten (denser/heavier than steel) to be placed for a better instant of momentum. The 7 iron that "is almost a 5 iron loft" in the T300, launches similarly to a T300 7 iron but still almost as long as a T300 5 iron. That was my observation from a fitting on 3/14 (compared T200 through T400). I'm 70 and driver head speed is 85 on a good day. My AP3 7 iron was 130-132 yards. The T400 was 148 but the flight visually looked more like a 7 iron strike than a 5 iron strike.

The average player (90-95 mph driver head speed) will likely balloon shots with my irons. Same as with my TS1 driver. But I need the added launch for more distance. My last confusion is reworking my wedge gapping. I ordered 6-"43" with a 38 degree PW. Just forget about the iron number and look at ball speed, launch angle, and carry during a fitting. I have carried a 5 iron in the past but stopped at 6 iron as the 5 iron (20) is less loft than my 7W (21). When I get a chance to use the 6 iron and see the gap to the 7W, I'll worry about a 5 iron then.
