I've recently seen here and elsewhere that irons only have one iron head (7 iron now) and how does one know how the PW or 5 iron will play. Seems difficult for trying a mixed bag of T100S and T200 when the lofts match. Let alone other combinations like T200 6-PW and T300 4-5 iron.

Clearly, 3-PW heads for 7 lines of irons and the correct length shafts would be overkill to try to fit every iron and have all the shafts available. I can't do the math on my fingers. But 500+ shafts would not be out of the question.

Opening the discussion - should Premier, Titleist Thursday's, and/or TPI/Manchester offer more like 5 and 8 iron heads instead of (just) 7? I can see that as an upside for marketing to better amateurs. But hard to stuff that many heads into a fitting bag at a retailer carrying clubs from 9 OEM that also only carry the 7 iron.

  2. Our local rep brings full sets of irons (normal sets, not removable head demo's) as well as the 7 iron and multiple shaft options. This way the can do the fitting with the 7 iron, but at least test the long and short irons, even if they aren't the right shafts a player can at least get a sense of how the club looks/feels. When it comes to blended sets (which I have seen less and less of lately) we make sure the loft gap is adequate and take ijnto account a "hotter face" blending with less hotter face to keep the distance gaps there. Not a bad set up for amateurs imo.

It would definitely be better to be fitted for a 5 and 8 iron instead of just a 7 or 6 iron.

Iron fittings are more about lie and shaft flex which can be determined with one iron and then build your mixed set accordingly. If fitters had multiple heads to fit, they would also have to have full shaft sets for each of those irons. It would get to be too big of an inventory and could really get confusing if you liked different shafts for different irons tested. My suggestion would be "don't go full Bryson" and find that balance between matching your needs and making your selection. Most of us should be a fairly easy fitting for irons.
