Defining the gap.

  1. Hi guys,

Hereby my first post from Amsterdam, the Netherlands on this very interesting and helpful forum where I notice a lot of expertise.

I started playing golf 4 years ago and play a Hcp 9. I recently moved from game improvement irons to 718 AP2. (AMT Tour White s300 shaft) I must say I am very impressed with these clubs. It is a huge difference with the starter set. I have so much more control and feel and am hitting the greens way more often. For the first time I see no bounce on the green but a nice spin/backroll. Especially with my scoring irons.

Well congrats one would say ;-) But there is also a drawback. Actually a few.

I lost almost 20 meter per club. I know this is also because AP2 is way weaker than improvement irons and the nr on the club is all relative. But besides the mental aspect I notice it is very hard for me choosing the right clubs. Also because of the gaps.

Yesterday I went to the DR and used the Toptracer system to make a distance table. I wrote down only the hits that I judged as descent. I enclose the table here. I am very interested in what some experts are seeing on my data. I noticed myself:

-I know I have a high flight pattern but aren't these launch angles way too high? -I hit my iron 6 just as far as my iron 7. It is not about difficulty because it goes up again at 5+4. -The distance table/line is not fluently and I have some nasty gaps.

    What to do?

I am currently thinking of bending the set 2 degrees stronger and take the 4i out and place a 4 and 5 iron of the t200 in the bag (maybe with a Aerotech Steelfiber shaft).

Anyone who can help me making steps? Obviously I understand it when people say go to a Titleist fitter but they are not as accessible as in the US and UK.

Sorry for my English and lack of knowledge. Any help is appreciated.

All the best and happy game! Orlando

While we all are in love with greater distance with a driver, more important with irons is having consistent distance, minimal dispersion, and sticking the ball on the green. So yes, losing distance is both possible and desirable for controlling landing on the green. You should be able to find a golf pro with a launch monitor that can combine the knowledge of your swing with the data from the monitor to recommend changes. It's fun for us to guess what you need, but there are 3 possible results from our advice. You'd be worse, the same, or better. A professional review is more likely to have a better result and takes a worse outcome off the list.

The clubs are labeled as static loft - loft that is measured on a machine. How the club interacts with the ball is based on the dynamic or effective loft. The angle of the shaft lean at contact and whether your strike is down or up on the ball all create the dynamic loft. Measurements from a Trackman or FlightScope include the "attack angle" and ball spin, reverse and side spin.

One possible explanation for the 6 iron is the loft of the 6 and 7 irons are not as listed. Part of the assessment will be to get all the irons bent, if needed, to the correct 3 or 4 degrees of gap from iron to iron. It looks like the 7 iron may be closer to 32 degrees and the 6 iron may be closer to 31. Forged irons should be checked for loft every other year if not every year.

If coming from irons like my AP1s the AP2 are a whole club (3 degrees) different. Which is why your hitting each club "weaker" a AP1 4i is the same loft as an AP2 3i.

The T200 are lofted similar to the AP1 improvement clubs.
4 iron is 21 degrees, 5 iron is 24 degrees.

You're AP2 6 iron is 30 degrees. That would leave a whole club gap after strengthening your loft. Two club gap if you don't.

You're clearly playing the wrong shaft. If you are only hitting your 7 iron 130 yards, you obviously don't have the club head speed to play S300 shafts. You might want to look into something much softer and lighter to help you gain speed. Without speed, you can't get the ball high enough with the longer clubs and they will all essentially travel the same distance. I would start with a regular flex graphite shaft and go from there.
