Can't hit T100

  1. Hey Gang,

I have used Titleist irons for 40 years, going back to DCIs, 962s,etc. Handicap is 9, should be a little lower. I picked up a set of 735CBs about 15 years ago and absolutely love them. They have mid-size grips and s100 stiff shafts. I was lucky to find another very clean set last year with rifle shafts and midsize CP2 grips that I like even better.

My son took up the game a few years ago and has really done well, playing to 11, with aspirations of playing in college. He is playing AP2s. For some reason, thinking its the grips, I cannot hit his AP2s.

I have been eyeing T100s for a while and finally decided that there must be something to the hype and that the new technology would surely help my game. A purchased a barely used set with Tour White shafts. I hit them well in the simulator but when I got on the course, it was horrible. Lots of shots had a strange click sound, and I really struggled to make solid contact. They have new tour velvet standard grips.

My questions is, would it be worth switching out the grips to CP2 midsize or is there some other factor I am missing? I really want to love these clubs, but so far I am only handicapping myself with them.

    Appreciate any insights.

    Thank you.

You say you have used larger grips for 15+ years so I am not surprised to hear you have some issues adjusting to these. You certainly can change out the grips pretty easily and cheaply compared to other adjustments or if the grips are really right for your hand size, you will just need to put in the range time to get your swing adjusted to the difference. Good luck, hope it works out for you.

Having confidence in your grip of choice as important as it is, I would first be sure that the Tour White shaft is a good fit fit for you- the shaft profile may not be as good a fit as your previous S100 shafts.

Throwing on midsize grips will also lengthen the adjustment period as that will reduce swing weight, change balance point and increase overall weight. Your timing will be thrown off...

Do you know if the weight is different between the different style grips. Like was already mentioned, the different weight (if any) between the grips could be effecting your swing. Of course, the way the grips actually feel in your hand could create issues too.

I'd recommend getting your old grips on the "new" set to see if things improve. There are actually ways to retrieve the old grips (if their still in good condition) and place them on your "new" set. I've done it plenty of times with irons, woods and putters.
