I went to PGA superstore and got fitted for the T200 irons. My question is do you order clubs based on fitting? The reason I needed to change shafts from regular sto stiff and this would be the cheapest way instead of replacing in my current T200 clubs. I have been taking lessons and the pro stated I need to change.. While being fitted, we tried 3 shafts and the shaft with the desired spin rate was the KURO KAGE TiNi 85 Shaft Flex: Stiff. The second reason for the question was the fitting was on a mat instead of turf. The launch monitor should be the same. Is there a difference when getting fitted on turf vs mat?

Certainly. Mats will launch higher. The mat offers a different compression than course conditions. If someone told me launch monitors can adjust for the mat, I’d want to see data to prove that.

The fitting at the PGA store was after the lessons? If so and the pro recommended something more suited to your swing, then it should be ok. Just don’t expect the carry/total distance from the mat to be the same on course. The same as you don’t measure range ball flight for on course performance.

Mats don’t always launch higher. If you are a picker, you would get fairly consistent results with the range, assuming you are using the same balls. But, agree with Don O, if you have a descent angle of -3 or the like, you will likely see the ball go much farther off mats. Some fitting places do have mats with better grass-like characteristics (my local Club Champion is one of them). My descent angle on my 6 iron was about 4-5 degrees and the ball definitely flew higher and farther off the tight/normal mats than the grassy hitting area…
