I have 80 gm graphite shafts in my irons but have stock steel shafts in my Vokey wedges of 52, 56, and 60 degrees. It’s been suggested that I replace the steel shafts with the same shafts in my irons which, btw, are one inch long. I’m hesitant to do because I feel the steel shafts give me more feel around the greens. I would appreciate your thoughts.

My current set up is the first time I ever matched up the shafts with both the irons and wedges. Like you, I always felt comfortable with steel in all those "feel" shots. I would say it boils down to personal preference and then spending the practice time getting comfortable with the results. No wrong answer here, just go with what you feel most comfortable doing. Cheers.

I like the idea of playing the same or similar shafts in my wedges, but if you like the feel of the steel shafts, stick with them. If you're still wondering, get a new 52 with the same shaft as your irons and see how it feels. I know it costs a bit, but it's the best way to figure it out without going through a thorough wedge fitting.

Purely preference, some people want same shaft, some softer flex etc.- if you are happy with performance of current wedge shafts I wouldn't give it another thought.

At every fitting I've ever had, the fitter put me in the same shaft in my wedges.

I was advised to stick to my iron shaft spec in the 50 gap wedge Vokey but go wedge specific shaft on the true 56 and 60 wedges. The thinking being that the 50 gap wedge is sometimes used for full shots whereas the other two are far less likely to be used that way.

I’ve been really happy with that set up so far. Not sure I’d want my iron spec in the wedges, they’re designed to do such a different job.

    All the best

I decided to shaft match my wedges about 5 years ago, and it was the best decision I ever made. I love the consistency throughout the bag. Same went for my metals, driver and wood shafts now match also.

It's a preference thing, so I'll always encourage people to go to a local fitter and try them out first (if thats an option)

I am very comfortable with the feel and performance of having the same shafts in my T300s and SM9s. AMT Red R300.

Just depends on how you use your wedges. I don't swing LW, SW, GW anymore than a 3/4 controlled tempo swing compared to PW-4iron where it is more of a full swing. I have KBS Tour in my irons and KBS 610 shafts in my wedges that help with spin and flight control

I switched to matched iron and Vokey shafts a couple of seasons ago. I don't feel much difference, but shot dispersion matches my irons. Go to a fitting professional and see if it works for your game.

Thanks, to all! I appreciate the feedback.
  12. There’s no reason you have to match wedge shafts to set shafts. Some people prefer softer wedge shafts (why wedge flex is a thing), while others swear by a heavier stiffer wedge shaft. I would agree with your idea that the steel will give you more feel, and you’re probably not swinging the wedge full swings as hard as set irons you need the lighter graphite shafts.

Think matching shafts is a good idea as is wedge specific shafts giving more spin, better trajectories etc.

I heard that Tiger (not sure if true or not) went stiffer & soft stepped his wedges to provide more spin and flatter trajectory. I decided to give this a go with my C-Taper shaft option which I play in stiff in irons. Wedge shafts are now c-taper X flex and have used an 8i shaft in all three SM9s I play. Personally I have seen a slight decrease in trajectory, get a ton of spin & can go hard or swing soft on every shot I need into and around the greens. Distance control is fantastic as is feel. It’s a strong part of my game at the moment…down to the shafts, SM9s or just practice who knows but this set up suits me. If it’s good enough for Tiger…you know the rest.

I think it’s all personal choice like anything. Have I found the secret of wedge shafts?…no not at all but I have found another option and I quite like the results. Good luck.

I have found that matching the shafts in my wedges to irons is the best.
