Iron and Wedge lie angle

    Yesterday I caddied at a US Open qualifier and I got to talking to the player I caddied for about all sorts of things and I asked him what his lie was bent to or was he standard?  He told me he was 2* flat.  I told him I was 1* flat.  He then asked me what my wedges were bent to?  I said standard.  I have bought my vokeys straight from the shop and used them.  He said you wedges should be bent 1* flatter than you others normally.  I had never heard this, it that true?  Thanks for any info.

    Yes sir!  We tend to see tour players with flatter wedges and prescribe the same fix to our players.  Helps sole the club better on bunker shots, flop shots, etc when we stand a smidge further back from a normal chipping  motion.

    What are tour average/norm in terms of what clubs to bend and how much to bend?

    Jeff,

    It is true you should have your wedge that you use for short game shots around the green at a little flatter lie angle.  This is due to the fact that your not making full swings where the shaft is bowing on the downswing which makes the lie angle of club at impact needing to be more upright.  On partial shots, the shaft does not have this bowing effect which means you need a wedge with a slightly flatter lie angle, typically 1 degree flatter is good.  But for your gap wedge, which you make full swings with, the lie angle should match your irons.  I have my 58 degree vokey set at 1 degree flatter than the rest of my irons and gap wedge as I typically am just hitting partial shots with this wedge.  Hope this helps!
