Crazy question...Living here in the Upstate NY region, we tend to get some pretty severe weather in the up coming months.  Often wondered if leaving my Golf Balls in the garage ( yes its attached, but still very cold) affect the performance for the next golf season.  I have buddies who insist they should be brought inside.

I agree with your buddies.  I always keep my clubs and balls in the basement year-round.

Yep.  Depending on how cold your garage gets, it will affect the performance.  With that said, keeping them inside might not help much.  After a while outside, the balls are going to be cold either way.

I can't comment on the performance from one season to the next, as we don't have to deal with that much here in San Diego. However there is a huge performance difference if you start your round on a cold fall morning with a ball that's been sitting in your trunk overnight.  A ball that's been sitting at sub 40 degrees for 12 hours will feel like a rock compared to a ball you kept at room temperature.  If the ball is sitting in your garage over the winter and it stays cold all of the time, that might be better than if it was cold part of the day and then warmed up fr part of the day.  But I have no scientific backing to support that.

They definitely affect them during play so I would image it can't be good for them to sit in severe weather either.  Wny member here!

The ball does get harder when it's cold which will impact the performance.  I find it causes the ball to lose a somewhat significant distance (1-1.5 clubs).  Keeping the balls inside will help prevent the decrease in performance when the weather is marginal.

  7. To be on the safe side, you should just bring your equipment inside. I also store mine in the basement when I'm not playing or practicing. It's hard to quantify how much the cold affects the equipment, but it is one less thing to worry about when you're playing... so there's that.

Why risk it? Same goes for your clubs.  Extreme hot or cold, my equipment is always indoors. Unless I'm playing or practicing of course ;)

    Paul P,

I would watch extreme temps of any kind. I wouldn't leave balls in the truck of my car in the summer or in any area that might be extremely cold.

    Stay warm.

The short answer is the performance for next years golf season should not be affected. A ball performs best in warm, low humidity atmosphere and sitting in a cold garage over winter should not have any affect on the performance by the time you put the balls in play. The performance of the balls will only be affected by what ever weather conditions you are actually playing in, not how they are stored.

I don't think that leaving your balls in the garage will impact their performance next year.  I would suggest you don't keep your clubs in the garage since constant changes in temperature can cause condensation on the club heads which can lead to rust.

I'm going to stick some balls in the freezer and do some tests to finally know that answer to this.

When you do your test, keep out some balls (ball B) at room temperature. When you take the balls out of the freezer (ball A), leave them out at room temperature for 24 hours. Take balls A and B and play them. I would say you will not see any difference. Of course if you play ball A immediately after taking them out of the freezer against ball B I would think you would see a difference in performance.
