When my Vokey spin-milled wedges were new, a well-struck wedge would invariably leave 4 or 5 little slices in the face of my Pro V1 immediately rendering it unplayble, and costing another $4. Over time, I guess the grooves wore a little, and it happens less frequently, but has not been eliminated.

Has anyone else had this happen? BTW, not only Pro V1, any ball with that soft urethane cover.

Happens most every round on my "full" swing shots with my "old" SM Vokeys.  I don't mind as I like the way the ball behaves once it hits the green.  Can anyone report their findings when using a ProV1/ProV1x with the new C-C Vokeys?

    Hi Tom,

New irons and wedges will all have a tendency to shear the golf ball (for some people) because the grooves are new and sharper. Keep in mind that the shear affect does vary from player to player and the characteristics of a player's swing in combination with the design of their higher lofted clubs can also have a major impact on abrasions due to iron shots (called "shear damage").  If you tend to be steeper on your attack, you may see more shearing then if you were more shallow.

Also, Urethane is a material that transmits a softer sensation to the hands and provide more spin than Surlyn-covered golf ball models. The Pro V1 and Pro V1x (both feature a Urethane cover) are designed primarily to maximize spin and feel for higher overall performance.

  4. Hi Mike,

Does this have any effect on the flight of the ball ?  I often will knock off the frays and still continue the round with that same ball.

I rarely retire balls due to a few groove cuts.  A ball has to be really beat up before I will take it out of service and relegate it to the "sandwich size shag bag" (which I use for extreme water holes).  I typically will lose a ball before it reaches this point (1 or 2 a round).
